Love these videos. very informative. I am going to build my garden railway soon but was wondering how you fasten the rails to the sleepers.
@GandyDancerProductions

Hi Matthew, here is nothing holding the rails to the sleepers. The slots in the sleeper are little tight to hold the rails firmly.

@@GandyDancerProductions thanks very much for the reply. I'm hoping to to a run of approximately 700 feet and this track method seems far more reasonably priced than the pre made aluminium rail.
@GandyDancerProductions
3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewrogan9349 It's not necessarily that much cheaper unless you get the rail strips from a scrapyard. I priced it out a couple of years with new rolled steel in the UK and pressure treated wood from B&Q and it was only a little cheaper per yard. The advantage in my track is it's stronger with the sleepers stuck deeper into the ballast, it wears better and has better adhesion than aluminum track.

That's a good power! What would a 0-4-0 3.5 inch loco produce?
@GandyDancerProductions

It depends what loco it is. I would imagine a tich could produce 1/2 hp if it could grip the rail and you had good coal.

Hi, great video with some great locos! I live in America an was looking to build a small railway in my backyard. But it is expensive to get even a small loco, do you how any tips on how to build a railway on a small budget.
@GandyDancerProductions
6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I built my railway on a budget. It does depend on your skill level. I found a scrap yard with the right size steel strip for the rail and made the sleepers/ties from pressure treated 2x4's from Home Depot. I built the steam loco from scratch and bought the gas mechanical from a mate for a few hundred $'s. I also built the trolleys myself but bought the bogies from 1" Scale Railroad Supply. The gas mechanical is quite a simple machine and I describe in earlier videos. Most of its drive parts you can find on Ebay, you will just have to make the body ourself. A railway is not something you can build quickly so take your time so buy the parts as you can afford them. I'm moving soon so will be selling off the rail so if you live near New Hampshire you could get your first deal.

Are those hot rolled flats of steel? What size would be suitable? Will you build a new railway in your new place? Going back to the UK?
@GandyDancerProductions
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, the rail is 20feet lengths of 5/16" x 1" hot rolled steel. I've found it to be a reasonable price in UK. I'll probably build a short test track but there's so many good club around I won't build a proper one. In the US there were no 5" gauge tracks I could find. I will build SM32 railway though.

Will you model the railway after NWNG for Russel?

I could do but it'll probably be a basic circuit with a siding or two to start with. I'll see how it goes.

Yeah it's similar size but would say slight bigger. So do you think about 1hp on a good day?
@GandyDancerProductions
5 жыл бұрын
Maybe, if everything was right with a good fire to start with, but over a distance the boiler probably couldn't sustain such an output. These engines are only about 1.5% efficient on a good day so the fire is having to output 67 hp to make 1 hp at the wheel of your loco.

The ground on my back yard is very soft and wet, any ideas how I can build a railway on this property?
@GandyDancerProductions
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, that's a tough one. I'd dig a trench under the track bed and lay a drain along the course of the railway towards the lowest part of you yard so the track has a chance at drying out. They did lay track across Chat Moss on straw bails, kind of floated it. Just suggestions I have no experience of this.

It's a Juliet loco I have.. how many hp would that produce ?
@GandyDancerProductions
5 жыл бұрын
I'm not that familiar with the Juliet design but I would imagine it's similar to a Tich in power. What do you think? There was a large and a small Tich design which I think centered on the boiler size.

Why dose the gas mechanical always only pull one trolley and the steamer both
@GandyDancerProductions

It's because I usually ran the gas mech for myself and the steamer at weekends giving rides. The two locos were pretty close in pulling power.

Really that's not much efficiency. so a bigger loco like a 4f which I have in building stages would have more hp?@
@GandyDancerProductions
5 жыл бұрын
The 4F should be a lot more powerful with more wheels and a bigger boiler. I got my efficiency information from past competition like IMLEC (International Model loco efficiency Competition). I seem to remember 2% was very good but 1/2% was more usual.
