Learning realism is a stepping stone that's important, it just shouldn't be a final destination. I spent decades practicing realism just to learn realism is considered drivitive. The trick is to splash your own feelings over the realism. I've seen your new paintings, and youre doing a wonderful job!

exactly this. I'd like to add that the people who agressivly criticise realism in art don't understand that every artwork has different purpose, and great portraits is a skill and artwork in and of itself - as the old masters show. its less the technique and more the image it shows, the story it tells. but also, in every instance, the most agressive critics of realism in art are always the people who can't do it 💀 they never worked for it they never built the skill, so they shit on the ones that do bc others' mastery of a skill they failed makes them feel inadequate.

@@blah914I agree - realism by the masters wasn’t really realism - portraits would often have hidden meanings or agendas from the artist, expressing themselves in some sort of way. I also think it is a lot in technique. You need to know and understand how the world works in order to know how to break it. The honey portraits are a good practice in light refraction and ability to capture that translucency in both the honey and the skin. I’m sure the original artist probably also was having some sort of social commentary as well. Also keep in mind that it’s different to paint from reference versus from life - reference is from a 2D image to another 2D image - you often can’t capture the sense of depth like you can from life.

Time to continue your journey into surrealism. You definitely have the realism going well. The thing that made the great portrait artists great is they had the live person there with them, so they caught the little smirks, twinkles, etc and really they were a tiny bit surreal. You have been painting a while, but you are young yet. And going out of your comfort space into the world will add the soul you feel is missing. It’s experience. Just be careful, don’t do excessive things, and a good friend, partner, or sibling (think Vincent’s brother Theo) would be helpful. You are a great artist, you are doing the right things!

Deepest art secret at this point: I have nothing to say through my art. I have no artistic voice. I make art because it heals and calms me. I've been drawn to my materials every day for years, save a small handful of days, for this simple reason alone. It's never going to get me anywhere, and maybe I should just quit. That being said, I'm glad you're asking yourself these very important questions. You're so talented and young that it makes me want to cry. Hope you can continue to challenge yourself.

You may not be conveying a deep political/social commentary through your art, but at the very least you are expressing yourself is SOME way. Draw what feels right. That is how you convey emotion. Honestly “deep symbolism” is just a load of pretentious BS. “Her red lips represent the danger of her kiss…” like give me a break. I’d rather look at a drawing someone drew to heal and calm themselves than a drawing that someone came up with some symbolic meaning for. (I’m not saying this about ALL symbolic pieces. Some of them are very clear symbols and references that really fit the piece so I’m not talking about that.) To sum it up, you don’t say anything specific through your art, but you definitely say something. Even if that something was just “I find this cool” or “I felt this way when I drew this.” It took me years to realize I AM saying something with every piece, even if I didn’t realize I was saying it. Hopefully, you’ll realize this too.

@@morgenmachen2400 ‘meaningless art’ isn’t realistic art, it’s art you don’t enjoy. If you enjoy making something, then it has meaning. It means something to you. You might not know what that is, I don’t even know what mine are, but it is something you have a connection with. If you don’t enjoy it, then try something else. It doesn’t have to be comepletely out of reality or have one distinct meaning like his, it doesn’t even have to be a different style, it could just be a medium. As long as you enjoyed making it or how it made you feel, then it is important. It does have a voice. It has _your_ voice, and that voice, no matter how indirect or subtle it might be, makes your art yours.

realism is fine if what you are painting is interesting, simple doodles are also great if the subject is interesting. art is about the scene you are making, the thoughts, emotions and abstract notions in your head that make up your reality being expressed for other people to experience. the feelings it stirs up in people experiencing your art, whatever it is. i don't feel anything looking at a hyper realistic portrat of morgran freeman. just my two cents!

I think hyperrealism put a greater demand on the subject actually being interesting and evocative. the style is not interesting, so the story the image tells must be. it's a technically demanding style, more than any other, but it's not an imaginative style.

I think the subject itself was boring. It was a boring portrait of Morgan. He's being painted from a still image captured by another medium to look staid and proper. There's no background, no dynamic feeling in the pose or expression. No context. Hyperrealistic images are neither good or bad, they're just a technique. If this had been Morgan Freeman mid-debate on a topic he cares about or bursting through a door in some movie scene, if he was surrounded by his lover ones or his enemies, or involved in any kind of activity whatsoever, having any kind of feelings to be depicted, that might actually inspire or engage. In this, he looks bored. Placid. And so that's how we feel. He's in a blank room, in generic clothes that tell us nothing about him. There's no life in this.
