Nicki Boyd is the Curator of Mammals, Ambassadors and Applied Behavior at the San Diego Zoo. Her educational background includes graduating from Moorpark College’s Exotic Animal Training and Management Program, Mesa College’s Animal Health Technician Program, with an associate in science degree, and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and is currently working on her MA in Biology Conservation through Miami’s Ohio University, Project Dragonfly Program.
She has worked at the San Diego Zoo for 30 years in various departments and roles such as wildlife care specialist, team area lead, Wildlife Care Supervisor, Wildlife Care Manager, Associate Curator of Behavioral Husbandry and now Curator of Applied Behavior. Nicki is also in charge of Wildlife Connections Division at the zoo, which includes all four of the wildlife ambassador teams that has over 60 employees and 200 ambassadors.
She has held board positions for ABMA such as CFO for 8 years and president and is currently the Chief Information Officer. She a founding board member and past president of the Red Panda Network. She is on the board of directors for the International Avian Certification Board, International Animal Training Certification Board and is a certified animal and bird trainer knowledge assessed (CPAT-KA, CPBT-KA). She is on the steering committee for AZA’s red panda master planning, AZA’s Behavior Advisory Group (BSAG) and AZA’s Animal Ambassador Species Advisory Group (AASAG). She is also a newly appointed board member to The Biodiversity Group (TBG) a conservation organization supporting underrepresented species.
Jessica Leuthe is a Senior Wildlife Care Specialist at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Her educational background includes a Bachelors of Science in Animal Science and minor in Biology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
She has worked at the San Diego Zoo for 11 years in their Wildlife Connections department interacting with a variety of species. Before starting her career at the San Diego Zoo, she interned at various places including the California Wolf Center, the Alaska SeaLife Center, and the Avian Propagation Center at San Diego Zoo.
Katie Springer is a lead wildlife care specialist at the San Diego zoo where she has been working for the last 21 years. She received a bachelor’s of science in zoology from the University of California Santa Barbara. During her time in college she volunteered at the Santa Barbara zoo. Then went to Moorpark College and graduated from the Exotic Animal Training and Management Program. She has been working in the wildlife connections department for her whole career at the zoo. She has worked with a variety of species, and is a certified interpretive guide.
