@Nathan Brydn. Glad to hear you found this arranging tutorial useful and appreciated the sounds. Achieving a more or less realistic big band brass section sound with virtual instruments is a challenge. Fortunately that does not affect the information value of this video. Thanks.

Thank you! How would you voice a G7alt with the b5 (b13)in the melody for trumpets and trombones. ?

@Nelson Riveros the short answer to your question about voicing the G7alt for tutti brass is: it depends, on 1) the type of setting, i.e., cluster-close-open (trumpet triads), 2) the number of instruments (3+3, 3+4, or 4+4). You mention 2 lead pitches, either db=b5=#11, or eb=b13=#5; do you want options for both cases? Here are some suggestions (bottom-to-top) for lead b5: open with trumpet triads (f-b-eb)-(f-ab-db), (f-b-eb)-(f-bb-db), both with not the best doubling of chordal function 7. Then (f-b-eb)-(ab-bb-db), (b-eb-f)-(ab-bb-db), or non-triad (f-ab-b)-(eb-bb-dd). Here are some 4-part (cluster) options: (bb-b-eb-f)-(g-ab-bb-db), (f-ab-b-eb)-(g-ab-bb-db), (b-db-eb-f)-(g-ab-bb-db), or even (db-eb-f-g)-(ab-bb-b-db). Consider maintaining the 3rd interval between two top trumpets. But another relevant aspect is the context; what chords and lead notes come before and after the current lead note? Then voice leading per part is a determiniing factor (augmented leaps, parallel/contrary motion, internal tuning and balance). Does this help?

The first sound samples always have this very low sound that, though in tune, is not a brass sound and is present even when the high brass is playing. It's a little confusing. Is there a purpose for that sound? (It sounds like a low note on a Rhodes e-piano).

Thanks for asking. What I suppose you are referencing to is the chord root tone, as played by a plucked double bass, and doubled with a synthesizer sine tone for additional sustain. This timbre is mixed at relatively low volume with the brass sound, in order to be able to experience the relation between the section lead voice or the upper functions chord structure and the root. Does this answer the question?

@@FransAbsil. I see. I thought it would sound better as an example without it but I understand your reasoning.

Thanks for the comment. Glad to hear you discovered a relevant and useful subject in this video tutorial. The brass section voicings demonstrated here are used in the later episodes on writing for jazz ensemble.
