Thank you for this video.🙏🏼 my internal battery just went on my 32 voice SD-1 and these steps worked perfectly to backup my programs. You are today's "transoniq hacker" in my opinion. Cheers.✌

You’re a legend for making this extended series on the ESQ1! I’ve always appreciated these Ensoniq synths from afar, a lifelong drummer/bass/guitar player I’m just now getting my first couple keyboards and this really helps breakdown the intimidation factor 🤘🏼 thanks very much from Austin,Tx

Wow. Just discovered this. Very helpful. Thank you. Is there a way to midi dump sequences to the PC or MAC?

I think the video covers the PC? I don't know about the mac though.

Thanks for the MIDI OX walkthrough. Someday you might also show banks and sequence transfers via system exclusive. I'd like to suggest three more video ideas with this synth: (1) With the right sysex patch you can get at the so-called "hidden" waves (probably most useful for D50 & M1 "New Age" sounds). A lot of "empty" there, but also a lot of sonic weirdness, and at the core, a cool subset of useful oscillators. IMO the ESQ-1 is superior to the SQ-80 as far as the usability of its hidden waves (e.g. the Sam Mims Syntaur hidden wave soundset). (2) You may also consider doing a video featuring real pulse width modulation using the Slinkard Maneuver (Transonic Hacker #85, July 1992). Using non-square waveforms, this gets you in the neighborhood of the sound of wavetable scanning vis-a-vis the PPG or transwaves. (3) Since the "PEDAL" modulation source is actual a CV input, you could also examine patching in a modular LFO or envelope. You'll need to go from 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch for Eurorack, but the module voltages themselves work without modification (although a variable attenuator is handy to keep it musically useful sometimes). Good for monophonic LFO effects (like a Leslie) or sample and hold, etc. Also, I am a fan of that theme tune! Well done.

Thanks so much for taking the time to make the suggestions and glad you liked the track. I've not found a way to effectively receive banks using midi-ox, that's why I didn't add it. I'm currently assessing alternative solutions for patch storage for the ESQ-1 and other devices. Once I feel I have something solid, I'll certainly do a video on it. The hidden wave idea is currently in "pre-production" so with luck, I should be able to get something together in the next month. Similarly someone already mentioned the pulse width modulation technique, although I didn't realise there was an article in transonic hacker, so that's really helpful. The CV input should also be possible, as I could drive it with the microbrute. So thanks again. If you get any other ideas feel free to let me know. :-)

@@RunningonairMusic RE Bank reception, the trick is hidden in plain sight in the manual, and its so obvious (but non-intuitive) that I got it wrong at first. The secret is to keep the display on one of the patch selection pages when you send the bank (e.g. INT 1). The new bank should overwrite the 40 in the INT bank. It will also work if you have cartridge patches selected, but it will still write to the INT location. You'll have to move the banks to cartridge manually from the storage page (assuming that is their desired location). Something like MidiQuest is a great solution, but it isn't automated. You still have to enable the PC+SS+SX receive string, and put the display on a patch selection page to receive banks.

This is apparently for OS v3.5 ROMset. My ESQ-1 is running v2.0 so the MIDI screen menu is not the same as his. I cannot load the esq1-factory-presets.syx on either MIDI channel 01 or 16 using MIDI-OX. v2.0 only has options to send/receive from either a tape or from a Mirage over MIDI. Bummer. Now just waiting til next week for the v3.5 ROMs to arrive...no love this weekend other than 40 patches of BRASS 1 hehehehe.

How do you import esq1 patches from computer to esq-80? Can you put one file in the internal memory basically like your overwriting the patch inside your synth

I think SQ80 patches are the same format, so it should be much the same.

fantastic, the 'load' function is so easy... Unfortunately, one .syx file fills the entire synth instead of just one patch. Not sure why.

Hello. Great expert video. Could you help. I have ensoniq ks32 and I try to send sysex files to it from PC ( windows 7) using either MIDIOX or KSEDitor. The light out flashes. Seems to be sending smth but the synth does not receive anything. Sometimes " sysexError press any key "I've tried changing buffers and num but nothing helped. I'm using the cheapest midi USB available.

If it's a cheap usb-midi device, i suspect that is your problem. They don't support sysex.

I think your best bet would be to record them in. Try external sync first. If that doesn't work. Just set the tempo the same. You should then be able to quantize and slide parts around as required.
