RJTheHero, I'm with you on this. I'm reminded of another game that was similar in gameplay and had a few of its own quirks: Minority Report. It was "bad" because of its repetitive game and design (doubling its length by replaying levels...only mirrored), and seemingly directionless other than the wanton fighting going on... But if that's what you're there for, Minority Report was gold, as is Enter The Matrix. These games were likely not worth the price at the release, the the price as of today and the FUN you can have with it is worth whatever flaws they supposedly have. Cost vs. benefit, this stands ABOVE games we would consider good by comparison.

RJTheHero I think that's one point this guy sorely failed to understand. Playing this game without Hacking is like going into The Matrix itself without an Operator. Your denying yourself one of the most crucial assets to the experience. "OH, it's just DOS." Hey, guess what, jerk? Some of us weren't lucky enough to get to mess around with DOS, so it was a fun learning experience for us.
@DragonNexus

Wow, literally my experience too. Hated the game because it was hard and awkward and I hated not being able to bullet time whenever I wanted, so I used cheats. I still didn't particularly enjoy the game, but the ability to just Neo out made it more tollerable.

Ok, here's what happened with this game behind the scenes: Shiny Entertainment was developing this game, and they had full intentions to make this game every bit as spectacular as fans were expecting it to be. It genuinely was supposed to be a masterpiece, and a lot of care was being put into the game. However, Atari, the game's publisher, was having a bad quarter and decided they needed money. As a result, they decided to capitalize on the release of The Matrix's sequel by releasing Enter the Matrix on the same day. However, the game wasn't complete. Shiny was still working on the project, and needed more time to get it done. Unfortunately, Atari didn't care. They forced Shiny to pack up what they had and sell it as-is. An unfinished build of the game was released to the public because, in a desperate cash-grab, Atari refused to let the developers finish the game, disappointing fans everywhere in the first place. If Atari hadn't forced the game out the game out the door, would it have lived up to the hype? Would it have been a great game? Unfortunately, we'll never know,

The problem with "Enter the Matrix" and "The Matrix Reloaded" is that they tell two halves of the same story, and the two halves sort of need each other. The game also makes no sense unless you watch "The Final Flight of the Osiris" first. This was back in the days of VHS, and I actually tried splicing the cutscenes from the Animatrix, Enter the Matrix, and The Matrix Relaoded into one continuous film. It was actually a LOT better! I never finished the project though.

I was probably wearing matrix colored green goggles, and thought it was better than it actually was, but I enjoyed it. I did lots of the hacking stuff... I liked the mini movie built in, which tells you why the Oracle looks different,... I picked up on all of the story points inserted in it... I liked the Merovingian part... I know it’s really unfinished and flawed and broken... and everything you said about the look of it is spot on, but I liked it when I was in my 20’s. I played this game for hours, "running into room after room and spraying people down in slow motion." It was a challenge to see if you could kill every enemy without getting hit, all the while doing the most acrobatic spinning-diving kills, combined with wall-running transitions to and from intermittent fighting. The attack set of each character changes the way you play the game, adding a unique bit of strategy to using each character. I tried to play the xbox version, and the PS2 version was way better gameplay wise. The sword is so much fun.

I remember the game being an absolute broken mess. Pc version though, not sure if that was worse. The driving segments were practically impossible, so playing as Niobe was out of the question. But playing as ghost was also not a possibility, because in the airport level, in my version, it was somehow impossible to shoot out the tire from that fucking plane. So my gameplay experience was limited to start->first driving segment as Niobe, and start->airport level as Ghost. I still had a blast with the bullet time, but I suppose the fact that I literally couldn't progress kept me from playing the game enough to get bored.

bunnyfreakz Huh? I played the PC version to completion back when it came out. I don't remember it ever crashing at the cutscenes, but going into the hacking thing was always a coin toss as to whether it would work or not.

I beat the PC version when I was like 14, I never experienced crashes or performance issues and the game was relatively fun. Planning on replaying it since this review is so negative on it.

I never was able to beat this game. I remember playing some kind of airport level that would play a cutscene with a control tower, and afterwards the game would freeze. Happened with two different copies (rented not bought fortunately).

I had that happen with GTA San Andreas on the Xbox it was the mission when you got a van and robbed the guns out of the old vets house no matter what disc I used. I had to buy a new Xbox off of the crackhead that lived below me for $20. Man I miss florida.

I once had 3 fucked up, scratched copies of FF8, and had to swap between each of their Disc 3's over and over again to get through the various locking up cutscenes. Play 3 seconds, lockup, next copy! 4 seconds of cutscene, lockup, NEXT COPY! I love old videogames.

Like were you pissed off when you made this, you’ve complained more about this game and tried to nitpick it about everything. It’s a tie in game, you have to know about what’s going on to better appreciate the story but can stand on its own if you just allow yourself to enjoy. Christ, seems like you didn’t even try to enjoy this? It’s a fun game, for people who were inthralled by the matrix. “Nobody wants to run through every level in slow mo gunning down enemies” Speak for yourself man, you said it yourself you played it when it came out, and loved it. You can’t compare it to the games 4 years ago when you made this. You played it as your job and not to enjoy it this time around.

definitely the best in-depth look at this game I've seen on youtube. Nobody else really went into the Hacking mode in as much detail, especially covering the weird multiplayer and hidden lobbies. I liked this game as a kid in 4th grade at the time but of course we all know how much of a wreck this game was. Still is interesting to go back and check out though.

I can't believe you played this game on the PS2. I'm just impressed you completed the hacking without a keyboard. I played the PC version back in the day, still have it. If I had to use that onscreen crap I probably would not have finished this game.

The matrix movies were a descending trainwreck, with the only good part in the third movie being the fight for xion, seeing as how I love how literally everything had turrets, and the base was designed around fending off an attack. It was glorious. Also the mech designs really worked for the style. Literally a mech with the barest of essentials, like the ability to wield dakka, reload the dakka and above all, walk like a badass!

07:54 for those not in the know. the package that they are after and the captain and crew who died delivering it, can be seen in the animatrix short ''final flight of the osiris'' a frikkin awesomely realistic cgi animated short, that was rivaled in the graphically by nothing except final fantasy the spirits within, and it's a damn shame they never used Squeenix to make the game, cuz it coulda been awesome if they did. But anyway, go check that short out along with 'kid's story' and 'the second renaissance' if you want to see three shorts that 1.bridge the gap between the first two films, 2.establish the starting off point and reason for the first mission in this game, 3. give you a shed ton of backstory concerning events that not only show what life was like before the machines took over (think metropolis, the anime movie, not the black n white silent flick) and also what caused the machines to go to war with the humans, and lastly 4. explain who the heck that kid is in the films that fanboys all over neo at every opportunity he gets, as if he won't be complete unless he can somehow crawl inside neo, and live comfortably inside him like a little parasitic puppy. and how neo apparently saved his life, and why neo says he didn't because he saved himself. To be honest 'the second renaissance'', ''final flight of the osiris' and ''kid's story'' are probably the best shorts on the whole of the animatrix, and really the only ones that add to the mythos as a whole, with the other shorts not really adding much to the matrix story, other than some cool looking animation, and interesting concepts. i highly recommend them. enter the matrix on the other hand, just watch the cutscenes on youtube, you'll save yourself a whole lotta a time, and mental anguish, and still fulfill the mission of experiencing the whole matrix mythology.

I really don’t understand where all the hate comes from. Enter the Matrix is often seen as one of the worst movie tie-ins. It’s actually pretty good if you’re solely looking at tie-ins. You cant tell me something like the “Fifth Element” “Phantom Menace” or “Catwoman” games were better.

I remember playing this game as a young kid back when it first came out, I think I was like 12 or 13. I remember using a gameshark to give infinite ammo and then constantly firing my gun to work like a flashlight in the dark, dark, dark recesses of the endless sewers of the game. I don't really have any negative or positive memories of the game though I never got too far into the game because I could never beat the goddamn level where Ghost had to shoot the airplane's tire.

I understand people hating Enter the Matrix, it's not even close of being a perfect game but damn, I had so much fun with it. Running on walls, kicking the shit outta guards. I wouldn't play it again now in 2017 but I think it deserves a bit more love for what it tried to accomplish. It'll still be on my heart as one of the best gaming experiences I had in my life and also as one of the few games based on movies that actually tried.

As an addendum: the majority of old games serve better to be on our memories only. Playing some of the old games I used to love made me hate them. Some things are meant to stay in the past.
