STORY: GINA LOLLOBRIGIDA
LOCATION: ITALY
DATE: MAY 1999
She once had the votes of millions of devoted film fans, but now GINA LOLLOBRIGIDA, one of the biggest stars of the post-war Italian movie industry, is after votes of a different kind as she becomes the latest celebrity to take up the political mantel.
The one time sex siren is hoping to become a Member for the European Parliament in next month's European elections. Gina is running for a coalition called Democratici (Democrats).
Gina says she was inspired to run by her experiences of being a girl growing up in the poverty of a war ravaged Italy.
Gina, or 'La Lollo' as the Americans labelled her, made her screen debut in 1946 in the Italian production AQUILA NERA, and quickly became an established star in Italy.
But there was always more to this woman than a pretty face and a fabulous figure. She was a graduate of the Rome Academy of Fine Arts and was destined to become a professional artist before she got into modelling. That led to acting and, before SOPHIA LOREN came along, she was the biggest female star in Italian cinema.
Eccentric Howard Hughes took her to Hollywood under contract in 1949 but failed to find any suitable film for her. Her first Hollywood film came in 1954 in JOHN HUSTON's BEAT THE DEVIL, which was largely shot in Italy.
Her other films include THE YOUNG CARUSO, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, SOLOMON AND SHEBA and HOTEL PARADISO.
In later years, she returned to modelling, marketing and selling cosmetics and fashion, and made a name for herself as a professional photographer.
One thing is for sure about her latest career move into politics - she is bound to get the support of plenty of nostalgic, red-blooded, middle aged Italian men.
