It's too long because there's so much repetition. Needs better editing: like when you're talking about drive speeds, you should have just focused on the real world differences or lack of them. The Surface Go is constrained more by the CPU than storage speeds.

I have the exact configuration and it is my 'travel' PC. It's the PC you take to the coffee shop, to a class, on public transport in a backpack, or on a trip to Europe. Tablets are okay but this is a tablet and a real PC (with pen) that has external storage. With a 20K 45 watt USB-type C power bank, I can use the Surface Go on an 8-hour plan trip in coach and it easily fits in the tray table and I'm not using power saving techniques. Thank you for such a high quality and well thought out review. When used as intended, it is an excellent choice.

I take it on short trips too - I can get emergency work done when I am travelling for leisure or use the Netflix app on the flight when I'm not working. I also have an iPad but never use it as I can't really do any work on it (Due to my type of work - I know some people can do their full job on an iPad if they need to)

That's the reason I'm considering it. I'm going on a few extended trips this year and I want to bring something that can store my work (Word, Powerpoint and PDF files) so I could read and refer to them. I also use Onenote a lot. Last year, I brought my Surface Pro and it was too heavy to carry around everywhere since I don't trust leaving it in the motel. I'm hoping the Surface Go would be okay to carry around in my backpack everywhere, even on long hikes/walks. It's not as light as an Android tablet so I'm still debating. Plus I don't know if the Surface Go can handle opening huge PDF files with images, since I will need to read those types of files on planes and trains.

I think youtubers who review this always assume or take the perspective of content creators or video editors, but i think this device caters to a whole other spectrum of professionals out there, accountants for example who do not need extreme processing power but would actually only need a capable microsoft office device in a extremely portable form factor for traveling. And by all means it can be a standalone pc for that kind of work, it's just a matter of knowing what you buy it for, great review btw.

Yeah for the average student or office worker, this is an absolute godsend, if think of this as a low performance but high efficiency device, anything that isn't too demanding like what you mentioned and Microsoft office programs, the surface go handles exceptionally well. Compare this to other lower end laptops that caters to the non-enthusiast market like the hp x360 11 for example with a core i3, the surface go performs relatively better and at a smaller form factor. In short, this is a premium product from the lower-end line of computing devices, sort of the big fish in the group. However, at this point, I'd very much wait for the next gen surface go, and see if it's worth the upgrade, if not, then by then, this original model would be perfectly fine and would even have some great markdowns.

Accountants? Really... Sorry, any accountant can buy a full Surface or other larger device. a) It's a tax write off, b) it works as a primary desktop, c) a 12"+ display is more suitable for working and showing things to customers, d) I doubt note taking is a primary job of accountants, e) I don't know too many accountants who are on the go and/or can't carry a 12" device, f) battery life would be an issue, and g) I don't know any accounting packages which would run well on a 10" device running a Pentium gold processor.

I have to laugh at all the reviewers who judge this computer so quickly. I have a surface 3 which I picked up last year for $350 - keyboard $55 and it has been excellent as my second travel laptop. The small, yet capable form factor is a big part of what you are paying for - and of course - that form factor is wrapped up in a premium body. Very very nice. The entry level Surface Go is about twice as powerful as the Surface 3 I use now and am quite happy with so I can only imagine that this new iteration of the surface line will provide the same experience to other users who have an open mind and understand what they are paying for. Good review.

I just bought one of these for my grandmother. She is used to using an ipad or iphone but wants something that feels more like a computer experience. Your assessment of the Go is excellent. As you point out, many folks miss the value of this machine in many different ways. You did well in articulating and navigating through this. The price point and build quality of the Go opens up Microsoft's Surface line of products to the folks who normally disqualified them because of their high price tags. This was true for me at least. Well done, sir. I've enjoyed discovering your channel. +1 subscription, God bless you.

Thanks for the video. I purchased one about a month and a half ago and I like watching and reading reviews because peoples opinions are so divided. My use case is primarily as a media tablet. Yea, I know that seems strange but it does make sense. How many tablets have front firing stereo speakers? There are some but anything recent will be very close to this price. In addition, the speakers are quite good quality and actually have a decent range. I'm not terribly bothered by the resolution because it's usually sitting 1.5 feet from my face while in bed. The color accuracy, contrast ratio, and color saturation are also well above average. Battery life is excellent as well and I love having a USB-C port to charge it with because at this point almost everything I charge is USB-C. It would have been really nice to ditch the surface connect for another USB-C though. From a software perspective using it as a media tablet, you do make some compromises. Almost all apps will turn off audio as well if you turn off the display. However, the VLC player from the Microsoft store does allow things to play with the display off so that is appreciated. As much as people complain about the Pentium gold, it has no issues playing 4k h265 video from my DLNA server (which is a challenge on many tablets). I did choose to take it out of S mode for more flexibility. Full windows is a bit slow at times, especially Chrome. However, Edge works perfectly as a browser on the Go. Ultimately, I like having the flexibility to install whatever I want and use it as a regular laptop when necessary. In my opinion, that easily offsets the compromises when used as a media tablet.

Aren't the bezels there so you can hold it comfortably when using as tablet?
@EJYu
5 жыл бұрын
Hey, great question! So, to be completely honest, I gave that question a lot of thought back when I was planning out what I was going to say in the review. I acknowledge that thick bezels in tablets (generally-speaking) are good in the sense that they allow people to hold tablets comfortably while minimizing the probability of initiating an accidental tap. But in the case of the Surface Go, I just think they’re too big. I can hold a 12.9-inch iPad Pro or even the gigantic Clipboard of the 15-inch Surface Book 2 (“Clipboard” is the name of the display / lid portion of the Surface Book when detached from the keyboard) comfortably with one and / or two hands, and those devices have bezels that are nowhere near as big as the Surface Go’s bezels. Call me picky, but I just don’t have a taste for thick bezels-they’re extremely ugly. I know that there are some archaic people out there that like super thick bezels, but they’re just not pleasing to look at on tablets and laptops. (I still think that the bezels on the Surface Go can make or break a person’s decision to get one.) Anyway, thanks for watching!! That was a good question, thanks for asking!

Yeah thats what I was wondering... Last time I had a surface it was the Surface RT which sucked... the only reason Im looking into this one is because I want to be able to digitally write down notes from lecture of write on pdf's. Not sure its worth it though, but I want something with a detachable keyboard and I have no idea of what else could be good for a student.
@EJYu
5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I had the Surface RT as well, so I know where you're coming from. :/ I feel like you would like the Surface Go if you're in a Windows-oriented ecosystem. (Your primary PC is a Windows computer, you've got an Android phone, and you like to use cross-platform software like OneNote, Google Drive Desktop, and Microsoft To-Do.) Another good option is the older first-generation 9.7-inch iPad Pro. But don't let the price of that tablet fool you, because the Apple Pencil and first-party detachable keyboard accessories are still being sold at full price, so the 9.7-inch iPad Pro can get just as expensive as the Surface Go. In case you ever purchase devices straight from the Apple Store or the Microsoft Store (assuming you're in the United States), you should always ask for a student discount. Show them your student ID to confirm that you're a student. You don't have to be in college; high school students should be accepted too. I know this from past experiences. :)

That is a really well balanced review. I have been using the 8GB model for the last six weeks and I am really pleased with it. I use it as a secondary computer and it works perfectly for me. It is so portable and easy to carry anywhere and I find it very useful to have a proper PC with me when visiting clients or spending time with friends. Your description of the limitations of this device are very fair, but as long as you can work within those (few) limitations, it is a great PC. Thank for for a very informative review

@RedMageGaming
4 жыл бұрын
The biggest problems I had when watching reviews for the surface go, was people pushing the higher end model because ssds are faster and 8 gigs of ram is mandatory. The other huge issue I have with a lot of reviewers is comparing the device to $800+ ipad pros. and factoring in the type cover and pen as mandatory accessories, rather than just reviewing the device based on its capabilities, and what it should be used for, and how well it does the things its really meant to do. In the case of the go, its a light, multimedia consumption device, with the ability to get work done, and the flexibility of a full desktop os to allow for more freedom in the type of work you can do. Windows S mode is kinda blegth though, it wouldn't be too bad if it wasn't for how sparse the selection of good UWP applications is. I tried to find some good replacements for a lot of the apps I use on my android tablets/phones and its really hard to find suitable replacements. And common apps, are behind in their feature set. Thankfully Microsoft backpedaled on the original plan to charge $50 to go from S mode to Normal Home. Though it would kinda be cool if they did allow you to reinstall the os back as s mode should that be something you would want to do, as unlikely as that would be.

I got the upgraded model from our college. I use this only for school. For traveling to and from classes, writing papers and doing things school related, it’s worth it. I had to install chrome bc our school websites run better on chrome, but it works real well for me. I use my other lap top and desk top for anything else. I love onenote for class notes and being an adult student, it’s nice everything is in one place.

The build of the Go is nice, I have one as a second device which I use day-to-day when I am going to work since I have to also carry multiple work devices some days - I do have a Pro 2017 as well but I am replacing that with a Surface Book 2 for the bigger screen and higher performance from the GPU on the go. The Go is great and I have the 8GB RAM model and use it for the odd bit of Visual Studio and SQL Management Studio in a pinch or when I am away on holiday and don't plan to do any work but MAY need to do the odd bit in an emergency. I would like to see a new Go in 2019/2020 with an option for an ARM CPU on the LTE model, and smaller bezels but the exact same dimensions. SO same size but more screen real estate

I just watched it again 4 months after watching it the first time. Overall I think you did a good job with it. Yeah, it’s a little long, but you do such a nice job with the production and editing, and you keep the music at a level that is not distracting, unlike many many other reviewer‘s. The only thing I really didn’t agree with was your comment about the surface go having a good set of ports. There’s really only two that are usable in general, the USB-C and the display port. The Surface port is for their proprietary charger/dock, and the keyboard connector isn’t really a port in my book. I would have loved to have seen that jitter pen issue you mentioned, as I’m unfamiliar with that. Still though, nice job.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this and every detail in your review answered everything I had in mind - both things I wanted to tell and wanted to ask. I have been a Mac/iPad user ever since and have been drooling over the Surface Pro and Surface Go as of late - and I have my beloved Apple iPad Pro 10.5, too. Since the Pros are way too expensive, the Go on the other hand is obviously on the more affordable side. Despite it's low configurations, I believe that it would suffice my use for a 2-in-1. It is always better to get a slightly more powerful computer and use it for more years to come. This is like what netbooks were several years ago. I'm done with that era forever. My old 2005 laptop is the computer I stick into my bag everyday, and holds up very well for school work, while the newer and more expensive one stays home. It is important to always get a computer that allows easy access to swap out RAM or hard drive.

I used it for about a week and ended up taking it back. I liked the experience and what I could do with it for school, it was just too slow of a processor. I loved the portability and the pen for taking lecture notes. It kept freezing while clipping from the screen. The battery was way overstated, I got 6hrs at best. You probably need to run it on battery saver with the backlight low the entire time to get the promised amount of battery. I returned it and got the surface pro with the i5 and it's way better.

The primary use I will give this computer is to write on class and do Word documents. I don't really need more ram or more storage because I have my main computer for that. What I want to know is if I should buy this computer or an iPad? Which is better to write? Will having an Android phone and a Windows laptop degrade my experience if I get an iPad? If anyone can answer I will greatly appreciate it!

At the full £500-odd RRP price point I'm not sure I would have been able to justify the purchase - When I get the SB2 this week I will be taking more advantage of having 2 devices due to the bigger difference in screen size between the Book and Go, compared to the Pro and Go

This device is in my view one of the best computers you can own. Right now, I have this connected via the surface dock to two 24-inch monitors and keyboard and mouse. I take this thing to work and I have the same set up, but when I go to meetings, then I take this bad boy to meetings and make notes use the pen and either OneNote or Nebo, the great thing about these apps is that they convert my notes into text for further work. I work in the property industry and I often take this device to site to allow me to use building drawings and to be able to write directly on to these is great. I do own a Surface Pro 3 for anything a little more intensive, but I very rarely get this out of my backpack. Light productivity my ass! this thing works very well as an everyday computer. My company have supplied me with a i5 desktop computer and I simply don’t need it.

I'm an industrial design student looking for a replacement for my laptop. I built a desktop over Christmas and that has taken about 85%-90% of my workflow. My laptop, while nice, doesn't have a pen input and I'd like to get into digital drawing. How do you feel Photoshop and Sketchbook perform on this device? To give you a perspective, the idea I have is to use this device to sketch rough ideas, then take those images into my cad programs on my desktop for further refinement. Thanks for your feedback and really awesome video! Great production quality overall!!

What type of laptop do you have? Is it a Windows laptop? I think this should be ok for what you described. I'm not an apple fan but I'm actually looking at getting a 2018 iPad or refurbished 1st gen iPad Pro mostly because of price but I'm concerned about the file transfer side of things at the moment and actually want to get a 2017 i7, 32Gb RAM Surface Pro prior getting an iPad

@@matthewbarnes472 It seems like a good device if you're on a budget. But you might need to bring your laptop if you need processing power as a backup while on the go. If you can afford more, I'd recommend a Surface Pro (2017 or 6). I have a Surface Pro 3 but need an upgrade. I would love a Surface Book 2 but it's so damned expensive and for the price, I can upgrade my desktop, get a refurbished 2017, i7 Surface Pro, 1st gen iPad Pro and accessories; and still be under budget 🙄

I use Photoshop and other drawing programs occasionally. The pen input is good, but it's not really at the level of a professional drawing tablet. For sketches and rough work, it's more than capable though. It can even open programs like 3ds Max, although any larger project won't run well at all. If you intend to only use it for MS Office/Open Office/GoogleDocs, internet browsing and some light PS use, the Go would be perfectly0 fine. But if you want to find a full replacement for a laptop, you might be better off making the jump to a Pro 6. The screensize bump will help productivity, if you get one of the higher end models, light work on your CAD programs becomes completely feasible and the battery life will be a lot better as well. I use this Surface Go in combination with a BTO Clevo chassis heavy 17-inch laptop and my desktop at home. But I'm surprised how much it can handle, I barely use the other laptop anymore.

Hi, I'm thinking in buying Surface Go, but having in mind with my very specific intentions... I'm a graphic designer and illustrator, so it is obvious i will use it because of pen and excellent screen. As you mention in the video, slight jitters when you draw slow straight lines would be probably because you are resting your palm on touchscreen, it confuses it. Just an ordinary tablet glove can fix that issue :). As for my issue, what is actually best worth. There is also the MID-mid-level Surface Go with 64GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, for which I can't find a review. My type of working will be using those 64GB just for applications and any work I will be doing on it will be stored on external hard drive which I already have. And would use it as my main work laptop, because it is enough powerful for my use. So my question stands here, does 64GB/8GB configuration is enough power for working including in account that heavily use of all Adobe programs and Autodesk Sketchbook Pro (would try to get some 3d render like Rhino), OR should I pick 128GB/8GB configuration? There is also the most expensive version with LTE, is it any good use of it, because sounds like waste of money...?

I’m honestly kinda tired of people complaining about the bezels. Obviously Microsoft was generous enough to think about the tablet form. That’s actually a great idea not only do u not have to worry about loosing your work. But you can hold it without ur apps going crazy. When you decide to pick it up you have no issues. That’s the problem people want more screen. Not be rude but get a damn TV or Laptop.
@CodepageNet

4GB or 8GB should make a significant difference IMO. 4GB is just generally not enough, whereas 8GB mostly is. I would assume that having 8GB should really expand the way you can use this device.

I've had the 8/128 gb for 3 months now and it is fast even after going out of S mode. Daughter uses it as her secondary laptop for school. Am thinking of getting another one, the 4/64 gb entry level, for myself. I like to use chrome only though. Would it become slow if it goes out of S mode and get Chrome and a couple of other apps installed? I hope someone will say that it won't - that'll save me AU$200 which can buy me a pen.

I wonder what would be a better companion device for me for HP Spectre x360 13.3" 2-in-1 touchscreen laptop that isn't pen-compatible for drawing sketches & designs: the Surface Go base or mid-tier spec with the Pen or the 2019 or 2020 iPad Air or even the 11" Pro. I mean I already have a 9.7" Pro which is full on storage because it's only 32 GB & has a display issue when I try to write or draw with the Pencil in one section of the screen. So what should I do or get? I'm so confused now between upgrading my iPad to a newer model or getting a Surface Go to act as a canvas with the Microsoft Pen for my laptop with mirroring capabilities

I use word, powerpoint and chrome. I am always moving with heavy equipment. This device would be good for someone like me. The webcam coupled with a headphone jack is great for video calling. The sd card slot is a great bonus. I can download and store a lot of porn without the fear of running out of storage. I bought the pen as it felt cool but after the first month, I never used it. I still prefer a pen and paper. It is just more satisfying. My only gripe is the lack of ports. No usb A, hdmi or ethernet so, a dock is a must.

Honestly, the only reason I begun to consider this device for a few moments was that it's a laptop-tablet with stylus hybrid. That being said, I think I'm better off getting a Surface Pro 6 to be really honest. It's a much better laptop and during a sale the price difference isn't too drastic. Yeah, still a few hundred bucks more, but those will go a long way. Too bad that pretty much any respectable option for laptop/tablet hybrids that have good styli will handicap you by everything crucial being soldered-on. RAM or storage upgrades, because those OEMS tie them to MUCH pricier i7 configs? Yeah, not really happening. Honestly, the current 2-in-1 landscape is looking pretty sad.

You are right about sale prices - You can get the i5/8GB/256GB Surface Pro 6 for about £100 more max. There aren't often deals on the Go and some SP6 deals are fantastic on the i5 model.

I sold this hot steamer and got an idea pad. I tried to make surface pro 6 work, figured it was the size so I sold it and bought the surface go. After really trying to enjoy the surface go, I learned it was microsoft’s 2-in-1 form factor. Tablet mode on both is *atrocious* as it’s usability is akin to those EARLY palm pilots with the laggy mess of teeny tiny buttons. I kept thinking “maybe I’m just getting used to a new way of usability, keep trying”. In “laptop mode”, it’s usable like a laptop (albeit one with very limited viewing angles). That’s when I realized, surface pro/go is a garbage tablet *OR* cut-out laptop 😒 neither of which really match it’s premium 💰 I wanted to like it, I got sold on it through forums and chat. Sure, you can jot a note, but at the cost of a robust unit! The no fuss combo = a *real* iPad (for notes and everything else the surface failed at) and a *real* laptop for work.. Surface anything is just a pretender and not contender.
