This looks like a good little TT, but what made you pick it over the 120? I had the 120 for over 2 1/2 years before I upgraded to the 140. It was an excellent TT for its price range. And yes, I’ll freely admit that I’m a DD person, not a fan of BD. The 120 worked as well right before I replaced it as it did when I first bought it. I’d still have it if I didn’t want to upgrade to the 140 (which is a whole different discussion). So that’s why I’m really curious as to why you think this is a better TT, especially when I know from experience that the 120 is a workhorse and a fantastic TT.

I have tested a few of the budget turntables and that includes the Fluance RT82 and the AT-LP120XUSB. Both are good entry-level turntables and both offer accurate playback speed (very important!). However, the RT82 can be upgraded farther than the AT-LP120XUSB because you can change out the aluminum platter for the acrylic. Furthermore, the 3 conical feet on the RT82 make setup easy & are excellent at dampening vibrations. I also love that there is no built-in phono preamp on the RT82 so there is no subpar phono pre stuck in the signal path (Yes, you can "disable" it but it is still in the signal path regardless) as an excellent stand-alone phono pre can be purchased for very little additional $.

I’m glad you like the Fluance, and if I was a BD person, I’d get the Fluance. But I’m sold on DD, and for DD, you can’t beat the 120 for quality in its price range. And I’m very happy with the 140 as well. This always comes down to which do you prefer, BD or DD, which is an endless ongoing argument that certainly is not going to be settled here!!!

This is an Audio Technica AT-LPW40WN turntable with VM95E cartridge, I bought from Amazon for $265. brand new. The sound is fantastic, very quiet, you won't hear any hissing noise, totally zero - nada. It's stereo high fidelity sound is amazing. If you're planning to buy an entry level turntable this is a best buy, the price may be a bit more for an entry level though but it's worth it. If the manufacturer only added an automatic return feature, I grade this as perfect 10. So far it's 9 out of 10 for me.

I can't get too excited about Audio-Technica, and for that matter, Fluance is mostly repackaged Audio-Technica. In the sub $300 range, go U-Turn Audio. Above that, you're much better off going with something like a Rega, or a good vintage table. Edit - Bill McVey pointed out, correctly, that the Audio-Technica branded turntables are actually made by the Chinese company Hanpin, who make a lot of the turntables sold under assorted brand names around the world. The point is that Fluance is basically the same as any other chinese made table.
@QoraxAudio

U-turn doesn't have adjustable anti-skate; it's factory preset... because of that, I think there probably are better choices in the sub 300 range.

No turntable is a repackaged Audio Technica, because Audio Technica does not make turntables. AT branded turntables are made by Hanpin, in china. The Fluance ones may well be too, but they certainly aren't made by AT
@dansmith3085
4 жыл бұрын
@@QoraxAudio That's true about the anti-skate, although I would still take them over other brands in the same price range. They are made in the U.S., and have excellent customer service. That goes a long way with me.

@@nighmeansnear Fair enough. I've edited my original post. I don't like Fluance because I think they play dirty. They send out review samples to KZitemrs who aren't likely to know any better, and they obfuscate the origin of their gear by having it assembled in Taiwan from Chinese made parts. kzitem.info/news/bejne/tpWp1pmjpmOjl5g
@neilcaffrey3061
4 жыл бұрын
@@dansmith3085 I don't think sending out review samples to popular vinyl KZitemrs is playing dirty. Pretty sure it's just a numbers thing. There are not that many vinyl specific KZitemrs with high subscribers. They also have them reviewed by publications like Analog Planet. Michael Fremer is one of the most respected names in the turntable industry. As for being made in Taiwan it says it right on the box and on their site. I don't think they're hiding anything. All of the speakers are made in China too. That's how they can achieve some cheap prices for decent sounding gear. If it was made in the US it would cost way more. Also I think there is a certain level of arrogance to the notion that things made in the USA are inherently better. They just benefit the US economy. Many industries have chosen outsourcing manufacturing for cost purposes based on consumer demand for low prices. Many people vote with their wallets not their dedication to supporting "local". Some parts of U-Turn decks are also sourced in China. They source (as their website says) The vast majority of our parts (80-90% of our total Bill of Materials, depending on the cartridge) come from US suppliers." Asian manufacturing has grown by leaps and bounds in terms of sophistication since the 80s sweat shop and cheap electronics days. They also have some advanced technicians. They just happen to be way more affordable so companies go there. Having tried both Fluance and U-Turn, the U-Turn felt much more cheap to me. Not as substantial of a plinth. The motor was unacceptably loud. If I remember correctly it didn't have adjustable feet. And you still have to change the belts for speed adjustment. If we're looking at just the quality of the product you are getting I would take a Fluance over a U-Turn. Now for a reasonable upgrade in price (depending on what you consider reasonable) you can get amazing decks like Pro-Ject or Rega that will outperform both. The good thing is there are a lot of options for consumers and it just depends which features components and build quality people want.

VTA has to be done by ear there's no set amount it's finding the sweet spot you would hope the spacer is correct but maybe not! More than likely. and if you get some A4 paper you can adjust vta up a bit and replace spacer if needed with a fine piece of cardboard and do the same thing with the paper till you get it right, you can easily cut your own space from pizza cardboard discs then sliding A4 paper in sheet by sheet till you find the sweet spot, the lower the arm gives you more bass raising gives you more higher frequencies so it feels like lack of Bass turn it down a little bit could help as little as half a millimetre and vice-a-versa really needs to be adjusted for each cartridge after break in. Make sure you're always tighten the grub screws before any test. I thought you had a fluance 85 get yourself a project primary e $240

Thanks everyone for the replies. While you can upgrade to an acrulic platter with the fluance it won't have a carbon fiber arm. The Audio-Technica comes with a carbon fiber tone arm and you can upgrade the needle similar to the M2 by just swapping the stylus, all the way up to a Shibata. So is the tone arm being carbon fiber or the acrylic platter more important to sound quality? And why do they recommend a felt mat on the acrylic platter vs using a record directly on the acrylic platter as an acrylic matt is preferred?
@victorpirsoul3979
4 жыл бұрын
Julia Ferry The built in phono pre is going to be the Achilles heel of the AT Carbon VTA. It is definitely not up to par compared to stand alone preamps on the market and it is stuck in the signal path, degrading the sound quality. Yes, it is easy to swap out a stylus but the ML stylus replacement is $179 and the Shibata stylus is $199. Even if you replace the stylus, you’re still confined the AT “house sound.” Nagaoka makes some amazing cartridges for less than the upgraded stylus. I’d go that route (in fact, I did) instead. The aluminum S shaped tonearm is a proven design since the 1970’s and both the AT-LP120XUSB and Fluance RT82-85 utilize this design. It may not be as good as a carbon fiber tonearm but it is a proven design. The acrylic platter does not require a mat, you simply lay the album on the platter. I hope that helps!

@@dsonyay Actually every record in the world is cut by a cutter set at 92 degrees...and that's pretty much from the dawn of stereophonic recording. That means your SRA should be set as close to that as possible. As a result leveling the arm is the starting point and then you should at least raise the SRA a tiny bit. A professional installer should be able to get the number exactly at 92. But that is only the beginning of cartridge set up. The is also the azimuth and zenith, or the pitch and yaw of the cartridge. These also need to be set correctly. When all of these three things are done you'll have a correct VTA. Believe me, when as of these are properly set you'll hear a verifiable different as the sound locks in.
