Can you and a partner discover which of two imaginary wetlands has healthy water and which one is polluted? Use a worksheet (linked below) to practice your ecology skills. Sort and graph the bugs in a water sample, then compare and contrast your graph with a peer’s to discover which wetland needs a little extra help. Finally, learn about a real polluted body of water in Washington State and how a community came together to clean up their act.
This ~30 minute activity is best for grades K-2 and is aligned to the NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems and LS4.D: Biodiversity and Humans, the Science and Engineering Practice of Engaging in Argument from Evidence, and the Crosscutting Concept of System Models.
Required Materials: Each student will need a blank piece of paper, a blue and red writing utensil, scissors, and tape or glue. Each student should also receive one of the two worksheets below and be paired with a partner who receives the other worksheet.
