Hopefully this pronunciation guide, in Donegal Irish accent (where Enya hails from) will help those who wanna learn the lyrics :) The phonic spellings I used are words pronounced in English, while some aren't. Enjoy! Irish: English: Ag amharc trí m'óige Looking back at my youth (Egg uh-wuck tree moy-guh) Is mé bhí sámh I was happy (Is may vee sow) Gan eolas marbh I was not aware of death then (Gun your-luhs mah-roo) Bhí mé óg gan am, I was as a child (Vee may og gun ahm) Anois, táim buartha Now, I am sorrowful (Uh-nish time buar-her) 's fad ar shiúil an lá. Long gone the day (s'fahd ayr hule ahn lair) Ochón 's ochón ó. (An Irish lament) (Oh-hone is oh-hone oh) Na laetha geal m'óige The brighter days of my youth (Nah lair-her gal moy-guh) Bhí siad lán de dhóchas They were ful of hope (Vee she-ad len day gore-hers) An bealach mór a bhí romham ansin The way that is ahead of me (Ahn bell-lah more uh vee rome ahn-sheen) Bhí sé I ndán domh go mbeadh me, slán, slán I was destined to be safe (Vee shay ee nen doo go may may, slen, slen) Anois, táim buartha Now, I am sorrowful (Uh-nish time buar-her) 's fad ar shiúil an lá. Long gone the day. (s'fahd ayr hule ahn lair) Ochón 's ochón ó. (An Irish lament) (Oh-hone is oh-hone oh)

I mean, these are right, and i tell you this because even in the album are wrong (i.e. they wrote anonn instead of ansin) and in all pages I see this mistake. Are you irish? Thanks!! But it also seems that you messed something) Bhi se i ndan dom go mbeadh me slan, slan (that ME is not in your transciption and also not in the cd lyrics. I dont understan why so many mistakes with this song everywhere. Can you help me please?

I know I'm very late to the party here, but I want to thank you for all your hard work. Having done translation of poetry in graduate school from another language (not Irish Gaelic, but an ancient language) to English, I know what a complex, demanding task it is. I've also written phonetic speech guides. This is truly hard work, and your dedication & care deserves respect & appreciation. No translation can be an exact 1:1 correlation because the connotations & context are never exactly alike between any 2 languages. This is especially true with poetry of which song lyrics are part, because of the creative use of words to evoke &, call to mind other uses of the word which don't exist in English. Since I don't know Irish Gaelic , your efforts here made a very great difference to me in listening to & appreciating this beautiful song!

E perchè no, anche i bretoni in francia. L'inglese ed il francese sono lingue povere e noiose.

Hi there are several types of pipes across Europe. Scottish ones are bagpipes. However these are not bagpipes in this song, they are the Irish Uileann pipes
@user-yp6yr9te7l
3 жыл бұрын
@@shanemolloy6873 Uilleann Pipes ARE bagpipes. The term bagpipes refer to a broad class of instruments which use enclosed reeds fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag. Uilleann Pipes have bags which the piper presses with his or her elbow. The well-known Scottish version is actually called the Great Highland Bagpipes. There is another lesser known Scottish bagpipe called the Lowland Pipes. There are many types of bagpipes, from the aforementioned Scottish ones, to the Irish Uilleann Pipes, the Northumbrian Smallpipes of England, the Musette de Cour and the Cabrette in France, the Polish Koziol Czarny, the Bulgarian Gaida, The Spanish Gaita, the Latvian Dūdas, the Turkish Tulum, the Greek Tsampouna, The Italian variant of that called the Zampogna, to the other side of the world in Southern India where you will find the Sruti Upanga in Tamil Nadu, and in Northern India the Mashak. Of these are bagpipes. They all look alike.

Enya: "In reference to ‘Na Laetha Geal M’Oige’, for example, it would be difficult to sing that in any other language, because of the particular Gaeilge phrasing it has." The Irish/Gaeilge language is incredible. Just listening to these words, they really have some power. For example the Irish version of the 'Stroms in Africa' from the same album, gives you so all kinds of feels. The English one feels flat in comparison.

Irish would have an easier time if it didn't hold on to syllables no longer spoken in their spelling. There's an actual linguistic term for that that - several languages have the same problem, but it ends up making the language harder to learn for non-native speakers. Since there's no impetus beyond the language's beauty to learn it, and it's difficult to learn, no one who didn't grow up speaking it bothers to learn it. That's a death spiral for a language.

Language makes us children of a place. The feeling of belonging is touched by each syllable emitted above all in the songs. May each one of us, be anywhere on this planet, be able to understand the reason for our passage here, because, who knows, one day we will speak a single language and emit a single feeling, that of love, in the fullest of vibrations! PS. I miss u Éire.
