I remember back in 1981 watching MTV as teenager after midnight and "I got you" came on. I had never heard of the Split Enz before, but it was different, a very well done video, and the musical chemistry of the band was excellent. I have been a fan ever since.

SPLiT ENZ morphed into CROWDED HOUSE and as the saying goes: The rest is history!

Um, Tim, You and the boys ARE LEGEND! I’ve always loved your hits since I first heard/seen ‘I Got You’ on Satellite Music Videos, the precursor to MTV. However, I’ve been diving deep into everything Split Enz. You guys went from maybe 20-30 on my favorite list during the last 40 years, but you all have moved up to top five with Rush, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Oingo Boingo, pushing INXS (unbelievably) to 6th. That’s beating the likes of ELO, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Peter Gabriel/Genesis, AC/DC, The Cars, Simple Minds, aHa, ZZ Top, Billy Idol, Queen….get the picture?

Love the suits! Latecomer to the Enz - partly age, partly accessibility. The net has enabled us to discover so much in hindsight, and much as I love Crowded House, i find Tim's voice better than Neil's a lot of the time. And once you strip away the more gimmicky early image, the actual musicianship is awe-inspiring. Some of Tim's songs are very raw emotionally in comparison to Neil's but that would be due to age and life experience as much as anything else.

Paul Hester wasn't just a great drummer, I think he gave Crowded House it's personality, too. A lot of charisma. Maybe he should have taken comfort - which is difficult on your depressively bad days- to what the lyrics to Enz's Dirty Creature was about. But there's a lot of coulda/woulda/shoulda's in life, especially for we bi-polar strugglers at the best of times. I completely empathised with him when he made his final, fatal decision in his short life. :(

@@nickdryad I don't agree. I think it had a great sense of wanting to recapture the magic, and there is still plenty of magic between Neil and Nick (the others, while excellent musicians, are later additions), but it is a more sober magic. The three together were really something special that cannot be recaptured though.

You must be an Australian trying too make out a drummer from Australia that joined a band after the fact with the great NZ Finn brothers in it was anything but a drummer who joined an existing band. Look he was a great guy but dont over sell his influence this was all Finn.

hellovanite Neil Finn and Paul were in Split Enz together before Crowded House, they added Nick Seymour later (after Split Enz collapsed) and they had Craig Hooper for a few weeks while they were the Mullanes. Finn was obviously ambivalent about the nature of the band but Hester and Finn were tight and I believe it was always going to be about Hester and Finn, at least in 85’ and 86. There’s a telling story, that can be found in Something So Strong, the biographical account, where Finn says to Nick and Hester while they were in LA, that he wasn’t even sure they were a band at that point. They even had Jim Keltner on drums because Hester couldn’t get the shuffle-feel on Now We’re Getting Somewhere and Froom hired other session men, like Tim Pearce. It’s highly debatable and in my view, also improbable that Neil Finn would have made it on his own. Having followed The Enz, CH and The Finn brothers since 1979 it’s pretty tough to Imagine Neil as a solo act until after Crowded House. Not impossible but difficult. Hester was great on See Ya Round. Hester was so funny in live shows. Nationality had nothing to do with it.
