I too for many years thought the surrender was in the court house. Only after my own personal visit did I learn about the McLean house surrender.

What’s so fascinating about this is that the couple that owned the house and farm they used for the surrender also owned the farm that the first battle of the war started on. After that battle they sold the farm and moved farther south to avoid the war and yet they held a major part in the end.

I grew up about 20 minutes from there. It's a great site as they have never really changed it. It's the same as it ever was. That's very hard to find nowadays when it comes to Civil War sites.

Yes, it’s too bad that so many Civil War sites have not been maintained as well as this one! Thanks for watching 😊

In the start of the video you drove by my parents house. It was the green one. I live in Washington state so it was nice to see this video.

I made tour of battle sites in VA in June, '20. One stop was Appomattox Court House. With Covid, lockdowns, etc I wasn't able to tour the inside of a lot of places, but whomever was in charge of the McLean house had left the window shade open enough the peer inside. :)

Yeah, some of the buildings were closed but I still felt like it was worth the visit during Covid. Hardly anybody was there and we still got to see inside several buildings! Thanks for watching :)

I appreciate the video but this did not end the Civil War. It ended General Lee's involvement in the Civil war.

You’re right. It’s probably more accurate to say it was the “beginning of the end“.

If you're looking for more plantations in Virginia there are several historic plantations along the James River southeast of Richmond, Shirley perhaps being the most famous. Monticello and Mount Vernon were, of course, also a plantations, and they have much on display in these places about the lives of the enslaved population.

Thanks! We have been to Monticello, and I will keep those others in mind for a future visit.

if possible visiting historic sites that had a single day, best done on that calendar day mostly for how weather and surroundings would have been. like Gettysburg heat of summer or valley forge wicked cold day.

Appomattox ended The War in Virginia, not overall. Joe Johnston surrendered to Sherman a few weeks later. Kirby Smith surrendered the Transmississippi during the end of May, 1865.

Right, I like to call Appomattox “the beginning of the end“. Thanks for watching!
