One of the unsung heroes of practicing intermittent fasting is that by training yourself to run on your own fat stores, I have found that when I am in a situation where appropriate keto food is not available, I can effortlessly choose not to eat until I can get the right food. I did my first 5 day fast while my son was in the ICU for a week - and I had very limited options for keto food. I just decided to fast until he was out of danger. I drank water and coffee only for those days. Pretty sure it got me through one of the worst times as a parent.

I've been on OMAD 20:4 for 3yrs now. Predominantly carnivore, just a little veggies on the side. I routinely throw in a 48hr fast once every 7 to 10 days or so. Lately I'm noticing something strange going on with my blood sugar though. After about 48 to 50 hrs without any food (only water, green tea and black coffee) it is really low. Yesterday it was 58 mg/dl after 52 hrs. That's hypoglycemia. In the past my blood glucose never went lower than 70 even on an extended fast of 72+ hrs. Have I 'emptied my liver' (of glycogen) as you put it? Btw I have never been overweight with a BMI of 18, 2. So I am lean but I've only just started working on 'retoning' my muscles in the last two months: HIIT and 45 min walks (alternating every day). Life dealt me some blows in the last 1,5 decade and I became socially isolated and no longer physically active as I always had been. Depression kept me virtually immobile and just trying to survive from day to day. I was ashamed of what I'd become. IF (OMAD) and keto carnivore brought me back to life and were a turning point. I was diagnosed a diabetic based on a GTT (first T2 and lately LADA) 4 yrs ago but kept it under control by lifestyle changes. Never took any meds. My Ha1c always within normal range, well under 5%. In short, everything seemed to be looking up and going fine (only that the LADA honeymoon would end sooner or later). But those low glucose levels after a fast puzzle me and got me anxious. I eat low carb of course, but I would hate to give up extended fasts. I love them, they make me feel good and they have saved my health. Sorry for the rant. I'd love some advice from you Dr Cywes or from anyone with expertise or experience.. Thank you for reading this.

@@marymc6823 Yes, I see. I wasn't on keto or carnivore though at the time of the GTT. Just ate a 'normal' diet (as I thought of it at the time). Still, no junk food or anything. Just all the macros on a daily basis including carbs but never any added sugar. 'Healthy' food.. My doctor suggested seeing an endocrinologist after about 4 consecutive six monthly bloodtests showed a moderately elevated blood glucose. And Bingo! I was declared a Diabetic, although my ha1c was normal on each of these. Despite my BS going through the roof during the GTT. The mystery has never been fully solved. Some talk about me being hyperglycemic but not actually a full fledged diabetic? I started IF and later keto/carnivore to keep it under control. It worked. No meds. The hypos have disappeared again lately. The body always surprises.. Thanks for your reaction.

And I was working out during my rolling fasting days as well, not with the same intensity I did when I eat on consecutive days but I did work out. So you're doing the blood test which is a good thing, what you might want to do is get in touch with other groups like Cole Robinson's group or and others because there are people who are doing really well on those rolling fasting diets.

Because autophagy happens all day, every day. "Auto” means self and “phagy” means eat. So literally the body eating itself. Eat dead / damaged cells. Happen even to those people who eat once an hour every hour. It also spikes under hard resistance training. Hard HIIT also spikes autophagy. Yes, it spikes higher after 3 days. However autophagy not as beneficial as you may think if you feel it is helping in weight loss. Why do you feel you need extra autophagy?? @@DrAJ_LatinAmerica It would have been nice for Dr. Cywes to address this topic. Maybe try going higher fat low protein. Some people eat too much protein and stress their liver too much when their liver isn't in great shape already. Maybe 60-85g protein and up to like 200g of fat to get the caloric requirements given you don't need weight loss. Easiest way to do that is cook bacon and scramble eggs into that without draining, it takes up all the fat so it's not free liquid. You can also have pork sausage meat which is usually very fat heavy, a You can add butter or tallow to ground beef that's too lean, or put it on steaks or pork chops, etcetera. Just up your fats if your liver shows raised numbers.

Well, a snack in Greece is not always an emotional thing. Most seniors today eat 5-6 times a day, because their doctor told so. Three main meals and in between a fruit or a yogurt. These are their snacks. They eat between the meals,t because they were told so and not because they need to put into their mouth something (emotional eating) like us today (a donut, some choc etc).

Very informative. I'm mid way through so I have done a couple of 24 hour fasts. I do listen to my body and sometimes cut them short because either I don't feel good or my stomach starts growling.

I watched a video where the presenter suggested occasionally eating a low-GI type of starch like rye toast, and have some butter and a good chunk of cheese to that. The argument was that the fat will result in the glucose from the bread being released more slowly because of the butter and cheese.

I joined the ketogenic life style 18 months ago and have incorporated intermittent fasting. On most days I’m OMAD. I have lost 30 lbs but that happened in the first seven months. I would love to accomplish my goal of just 10 more lbs. it’s been extremely difficult. Can’t seem to get it off even switching thing up a bit including extended fasting. Good news though. Metabolic syndrome CURED!!
