Remarkable story. Being human, even the most disciplined scientists can become blind to the obvious, allowing themselves to become locked into an single hypothesis. I really think the current state of medical training is doing more harm to patients than good. It’s very difficult to find a physician who really understands metabolic function and uses that understanding in treating diabetes, obesity and other metabolic related diseases.

@Carnivore Controls Tech The problem is once you reach a certain level where you have to "know" a lot, you get to where you won't question the consensus because you "know" something to be true, and to question it is to admit that you don't "know" something that everyone else around you "knows" to be true. Medical researchers have to be at a very high level, and the fact that those around them agree only strengthens their resolve that they're correct about what they "know", because of this the basics of the scientific method are ignored. In the studies that the good Doctor mentioned, they got results that weren't what they expected, and because they "know" something to be true they looked for why the study was wrong, and didn't even consider that their hypothesis about sugar being good for the liver was the problem, and that's the beauty of having children look at things. They're not yet prejudiced towards one side or the other, they would (correctly) state that the study proved that the hypothesis was wrong, and that they need to come up with a new one. And he mentioned the grant money, it's always the grant money, because the researchers depend on it to be able to do anything (I'm looking at you Monsanto on the FDA and DOH advisory board.)

The addiction model works when moderation fails. I think that the devastating effect on this substance on our bodies and our minds is one of the biggest tragedies of our modern society. Thank you for your humility. I have sat in those grand rounds where we have learned that our hypothesis about some physiology is completely wrong and our treatment harmed. These moments keep us humble and learning. This really helps explain why TPN kills livers as sole source nutrition. I do however remember brilliant dieticians in the early 80s in the ICU bringing up brown bottles of MCT oil for the sickest patients who we were trying to wean from vents. She knew. We did not but it worked and I knew MCT oil was magic but only 3 years ago did I know why Thank you.

I just hope people will seek more information rather than limit themselves to expensive self proclaimed experts who seem a little fool of themselves. People who have to tell you how qualified they are typically are the ones you may want to be most weary of. Not to discount all the framed degrees behind you, those represent a lot of had work. But the general public is learning that research is too often biased toward Where the money paying for the grant came from, and therefore untrustworthy. So we will often take the talking heads life experience over all your degrees, due to what we are seeing. Frustrating to you, I know. But that’s where it’s at down here in the streets. OK, first of all, how do you determine who the wrong people are? Is being a doctor automatically mean you are correct? This is what I called the "myth of expertise". That's the idea that experts are always correct. The reality is that everybody, I don't care how smart or educated you are, are right about some things and wrong about some things. I have never met or watched a person in my life who is correct about everything. The way to learn is to understand this fact and realize that all humans have correct and incorrect information, everybody. You need to question everybody and everything when it is called for. Never just trust somebody's opinion just because they are educated, no matter how much education they have. Everybody is wrong about lots of stuff, including Dr Rob.
