Thank you CJ for the transparency! All of us reefers are always learning. I like the movements in your tank from the corals, the sand sifters, and your 26 fishes. That crazy water tilting is amazing. I like that! Thank you again for always sharing. Ill always be here to follow your journey! 😊

CJ, It’s great to have a brother in the hobby. I have learned many thing from but still have many questions. I just upgraded from a 110 gallon tank (tall) to 150 gallon rectangular, fish only. I have been running a 40 watt UV sterilizer for a year and half. My tank has stayed free of ick, etc. I would like advice on water speed through the unit. Also, I was just getting ready to engage my Santa Monica scrubber but now have reservations after viewing your recap of the last 7 months. I am going to stop for now but I will hit you again. Nate

Man, your story sounds so similar. I lost about 8 to 10k in corals from a massive alkalinity spike, from 7 to 15 and by then it was too late.... I lost almost everything and I haven't touched the hobby since... The fault is my own of course and I'm browsing videos to hopefully one day set up a tank again. Much respect as always, 👑

Yeah, I've definitely had issues with dosing adjustments myself too, so the lesson I've learned is to use just half of the suggested amount and do it over a much longer period of time. I've found that no more than 0.3 to 0.5 per day to be the safe sweet spot in an SPS tank, if not even slower. That 7.3 to 7.5 DKH you have is totally fine, by the way. If you can keep that number stable over a period of months, the corals adjust and will grow perfectly fine. Of course experiences vary on a huge number of factors, but I've personally found that keeping dkh between 7 and 7.5 I have had the least issues with RTN, STN, burnt tips, etc on my acropora. They may grow a little bit slower, but in my book, that's a lot better than frags dying off. UV is pretty nice, I just wish the units weren't so f'ing pricey. And I hear you on knowing what went wrong doesn't help the frustration. On the upside of that lesson though is that we're less likely to repeat the mistake. Or at least our wallets would hope so, haha

Im always cautious of having the wave flow in a tank. I believe there's a debate to be had on whether that left right motion in unison contributes to seams busting/leaking on tanks over time.

Ive been dosing manually myself. I have a doser that's been sitting for about a year now and haven't hooked it up. I'm slowly updating my tank to more wifi controlled & automation. I don't want it too automated tho, it'll take out the fun for me

The convict tang may out grow it, but having 26 fish should be ok. I have 20 fish in my 180 mixed reef, I have fish that may out grow mine like the Koran Angel or maybe the Sailfin tang etc myself.

Probably already know to you, CJ, but baking soda is sodium bicarbonate and soda ash is sodium carbonate. Just wanted to point that out in case it could have been a factor in your dosing problems.

May have been factor - used same dose both days two drastic diff bumps in alk. We are talking 1/2-1tsp amounts nothing drastic but a Costly lesson indeed

@@CJSAQUARIUMSyeah I was about to get a Red Sea since it seems like an easy all in one solution… until I read about their issues. 15:09 Will probably go with IM 75 INT due to its location in the room. Does the IM stand have room for a ATO reservoir in the cabinet?

I thought you were dosing kalk? why did you dose baking soda?
@CJSAQUARIUMS

Kalk keeps tank stable I was aiming for a higher alk then 7.3 the tank was running at. Wanted more wiggle room in case tank started sucking unexpectedly. We now are running around 9.1 so the mission was accomplished just at a cost
