Visiting Thang, the last Indian village near the Line of Control (LoC), has always been a dream of mine. I finally made it happen during the first season of the Great Himalayan Ride.
Starting early from Turtuk, I covered the 10 km journey to Thang, a route that's both breathtaking and nerve-wracking. Passing through Tyakshi, I headed straight to the Border Viewpoint, where you can clearly see the LoC and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). From there, the Pakistani village of Frano is visible, with its buildings and farms spread across the Shyok River’s floodplain.
After soaking in the stunning yet surreal sights, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Goba Ali, a self-taught botanist and innovator. He’s one of the few who stayed in India following the 1971 Indo-Pak war and became an Indian citizen. Spending time with him was a unique and humbling experience. On my way back, I unfortunately witnessed a major accident, a reminder of the unpredictable nature of these remote roads. Watch this Malayalam travel vlog to experinse the story!
