It’s amazing how 20 years ago “min of deer” was the standard that all firearms were judged. Today you can spend $300 on a rifle and $150 on a Vortex scope and you have a rig capable of outshooting you. What a time to be alive.

So, I'm 59 years old and I started out with the cheaper guns and upgrade do some decent guns. My favorite was always the Ruger rifles, which I have rugers and Remington's Savage. I don't think I ever owned a Browning, and I have Henry's Smith& Wesson's, Taurus, anyways, my go-to gun has always been for the last 10 or 15 years. Years is a Thompson center venture compact in 7mm08, well over the course of the last 2 years I rebuilt that gun but the only thing I rebuilt was I put Leopold rings and bases and Leopold 3 to 15x44 scope zls2, and a Boyd's stock laminated gray. And this year I went to Barnes ex bullets which I'm getting half to 5/8 of an inch groups out of it which I was shooting before nozzle partitions, 140 grain and getting 3/4-in groups. Love the gun. Glad to see that Thompson center was bought by Greg Ritz and he's bringing Thompson center back!!! Thanks for the great podcast and KZitem,

I know I’ll probably get a bunch of crap for this but my Mossberg Patriot in .308 is horrible. 5-6 MOA with M80 ball. 2-4 MOA with hunting and match loads. That’s always shooting prone or from a bench with a bag or a rest. Optic and rings are torqued and thread locked. I’ve checked the action screws before shooting just to make sure they are tight. Finally decided to try to accurize it with some pillars and bedding compound. Also went through and removed a bunch of the material in the fore end to give the barrel plenty of clearance. I just don’t like that I’m having to go through all the trouble to hopefully have a better shooting rifle. That said, you get what you pay for….

You picked a great batch. Of course everyone will have a favorite you didn't include, but I was shocked not to see a Howa in there. I have built a couple and the nice thing is if you don't like one of their pre-configured versions, you can buy a barreled action and a Boyd's or Stocky's stock and you are in the same ballpark with a much more custom feel. My 6.5 Grendel is set up with a Boyd's At-One thumbhole stock and I really love the combo. It also comes with threaded barrels on most of their offerings and you can get 0 or 20 moa picatinny rails and a great variety of other aftermarket stuff. If I had one complaint it's that the mini action has their proprietary magazines required. If they made those work with AR mags, I'd probably own 5 hehe.

I have the Mossberg 590A1 SPX 12 ga, And the Patriot Predator in 7 mm PRC. The Patriot walnut and synth stocks, they have always had a problem with bedding because the mag well is is a shim and they will not fix the bedding. My 7 PRC is in an Oryx. Another good budget rifle that I have is the TC Arms Compass II in .308 W. Aluminum pillar bedding and I later put it in an Oryx chassis.

the cost with a reasonable scope with a bipod and sling set up makes a mockery of budget, the Jim Harmer test where the AXIS was rusted after one wet hunt where rain was around a massive deal, their proof research carbon barrel version a big deal to avoid this. Bit like Tikkas usually having no barrel porting for a break or suppressor which is a massive detractor and simply not good enough having to get a gunsmith to engineer it. For me the looks of the CVA with its reviews everywhere get my dollars.

I think the savage access two has a rebate through the end of the month and teas have a rebate for the end of September

Won a franchi momentum elite few years back in 6.5 CM. It is now my wife's blacktail gun and my one dislike has been the box mag release... Now I'll have to see if I can just swap in the hinged floor plate from the momentum

Why does Savage not have the Model 10 on their website? They only list Model 110.

I wish you would have mentioned at least an actual and potential safety issue/flaw in both the Browning AB3 Browning X bolt and the Winchester XPR. Ever since a hunting accident occurred, I have always mentioned this design issue to people I talk rifles with. This issue was a design to accommodate shooters with poor form and trigger discipline to shoot "better". To date, and probably 100 conversations later, I have never met someone that knows or can identify this flaw in design. The issue.... The width of the trigger and the width of the trigger guard are nearly the same. Like within a millimeter or 2 difference at the widest point and a few thousandth at the narrow. This can and did lead to an unintentional firing of a XPR when the trigger was activated by the post mortem contractions of a carcass. Before you say anything about gun safety issues, I will simply say that all the wrong things happened at all the right times and an accident occurred. There are things that should have happened to prevent it, but when the bad juju aligns, sometimes things such as a design factor can make a difference.

CVA Cascade is amazing! I spent a lot of time trying to find the right gun for my son. We started with the savage in a 6.5 CM. Accuracy was great but the bolt was sticky, trigger pull heavy, and no muzzle brake. After one day at the range he said he never wanted to shoot that rifle again and he hasn't. We went back to the drawing board and landed on the CVA Cascade in 6.5PRC. Completely different experience. He loved the action, trigger, muzzle brake, fit and finish. The recoil on the PRC was even less than the CM because of the CVA omni brake. Group size is under one inch at 100yds. We topped it with the Vortex Strike Eagle 3-18x and love everything about it.

Good thing about the savages though is you can tinker. Lighten the trigger or drop in a timney, rebarrel it to a new caliber making sure to get one that's threaded, bolt lift kit to lighten that up.
