I am Shia and find absolutely nothing wrong with understanding that the blessed Prophet (sawas) was illiterate. Illiteracy doesn't mean a person is voided of intellectual intuition,and an ability to grasp deeper upstanding and insight into things,the Prophet (sawas) as stated in the Holy Quran clearly was illiterate,he couldn't read nor write,the 1st word revealed was "Read",the Prophet clearly stated he couldn't read,didn't Allah already knew that? Come on Syed trying to give some other meaning to the actual literal meaning only makes us go deeper down a rabbit's hole we wouldn't be able to come out,he was illiterate and brought forth the greatest miracle of eloquence and truth revealed to him, finish,nothing less,and Allah knows best his reasons for that.

Whilst in seclusion in Hira, Hazrat Jibreel Alaihissalam appeared and instructed The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, ‘Recite’. Thrice the Prophet responded with the words ‘Ma ana bi-Qari’in’. Maa Ana Bi Qaari’in does not mean ‘I cannot read’. consider the incident of Habil and Qabil, the two sons of Prophet Adam Alaihissalam , mentioned in the glorious Quran. It states that Habil said to Qabil: [Maidah 5:27, 28] And recite to them the true tale of the two sons of Adam; when both of them offered a sacrifice each - hence the sacrifice of one was accepted and not accepted from the other; he (the other) said, I swear I will kill you; he answered, Allah accepts only from the pious. Indeed, if you do extend your hand against me to kill me, I will not extend my hand against you to kill you; I fear Allah, the Lord Of The Creation. Here, also the negation of Habil of not raising his hand against his brother to kill him has been mentioned using the ‘active present particle’. The phrase used is Maa ana bi basitin (which has the same grammatical structure as Maa Ana Bi Qaari’in). This does not mean that Habil didn’t have the strength or ability to raise his hand; rather, he would not do as such because he feared Allah. So from the Qur’an, we can show that to translate Ma ana bi Qari’in as ‘I cannot read’ is wrong and inaccurate. What the Prophet (peace be upon him) really said was ‘I shall not read.’ Why did he not read? Because Jibril did not take the name of Allah for the first three times. Only when he said ‘Recite in the name of your Lord’ did the Prophet react! Only Allah knows the actual motives and wisdoms behind the Prophet not reading at that auspicious moment of receiving the first divine revelation. However one of them could be that since it is necessary to begin every chapter of the Quran with the name of Allah Tha’ala and Hazrat Jibreel Alaihissalam, in the first 3 instances, merely said ‘read’ without the name of Allah, the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam refused to read saying, “I shall not read.” In other words, The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is clarifying that if He were to instruct all his followers to begin every action with the name of Allah, how is it possible that he himself begins this divine message and starts to read without invoking the name of Allah. The Ahlus Sunnah correctly translate ‘Maa Ana Bi Qaari’in’ as ‘I shall not read’ so that the dignity of Hazrat Jibreel and The Prophet are preserved.

@@Thaqlain I am a convert to Islam and did my research before entering Islam, this was one of the reasons I accepted Islam and it makes clear sense to me that Allah (swt) in his infinite wisdom would use an illiterate Prophet for his final revalation because he is a pure vessel for that,he being taught by any individual would lead to argue he was influenced by other's,to me this is one of his greatest miracles and I will continue to believe that, there is no need to try to prove he wasn't,I'm good with my belief in that he was illerate and Love him even more in this regards,I think some Shias try to go beyond what is actual in trying to prove Divinity in the Holy Prophet and the Imams and they go way beyond what is factual,first we must understand that the Prophet and Imams were men and human,then understand Allah gifted them with certain qualities for a reason,and us trying to add to that is in itself a defiance of what Allah had ordained to be,there is no evidence to prove the Prophet (sawas) read or wrote anything in his own lifetime and that is what it is.

You are saying the same thing that Sayed has mentioned in his lecture. Except that the School of Ahlulbayt believes, as you too mentioned, that the Prophet wasn't taught by someone. But he knew how to read and write as he is a divine guide. In Arabic it is called Aalim gair al-muallim.

Al Salamu Alaikum Sayed I have a question regarding the so called miracle of the Quran, and please correct me if you adressed this in the video above or if I have misunderstood anything. According to my prior knowledge the main miracle of the Quran is that it was revealed in the deserts of Arabia to an illiterate man, which is why it is a miracle considering its content. But if the Prophet peace be upon him and his family was ABLE to write but chose not to write prior to revelation, wouldn't this go against the fact that the Quran COULD not have been written by him because he was illiterate? My point is that there is still a possibility for him to have written it even if he chose not to, because he wasn't illiterate.
@Thaqlain
Жыл бұрын
The linguistic miracle of the Quran is not that it was revealed to an illiterate person. Instead, the miracle is that it is the highest literary work, similar to what could not be produced, as shared by Allah in verse 11:13.
@ayefadhel9362

@@Thaqlain So if I have understood it right, the argument is that the content of the Quran is such that it could not have been produced by anyone especially during the time of the Prophey peace be upon him and his family, and the literacy of the Prophet is therefor irrelevant in the context of fabrication.

@zakisadiq8963
Жыл бұрын
@@abdul-latifabdulai-ik6tq what is the proof that he couldn't? By definition a person that is illiterate is someone that CANNOT read or write. It is the ability to perform the action by having knowledge of said action; not the action itself. We all believe that the prophet was without sin, not because he did not have the ability to sin, or know how to sin, but rather that he CHOSE not to sin. The same applies here, he CHOSE not to read or write for the sake of the authenticity of Islam. Choosing not to perform an action does not equate to not having the ability or knowledge to perform said action. You cannot assume that simply because he did not read or write, therefore that means he must not know how to read or write. That is a false assumption with zero proof behind it. There is no proof that the prophet did not have the knowledge/ability to read or write, therefore you cannot say that he is illiterate.

He said ما أنا بقارئ (ma ana bi-qari') to Jibril. There is no word "can't" (لا أستطيع la astatee) there: Ma - negative particle, "not" Ana - I Bi - preposition, it's not translated Qari' - a reader I noticed that in Arabic such words "reader" can be used as future tense verb. For example, the Quran 2:30: "I will make a vicegerent on earth" إني جاعل في الأرض خليفة (Inni jailun fee al-ard khalifa) Inni - indeed, I Jailun - a maker Fee - in Al-ard - the earth Khalifa - a vicegerent So I think if "I am a maker" means "I will make", then "I am not a reader" can mean "I will not read". Then it's not inability to read, but refusing to read. That would explain why Jibril squeezed him. Because of disobeying. Asking a man to do what he is not able to do is not logical and squeezing him for disability looks evil Why Muhammad disobeyed and refused to read? Maybe because he didn't know who Jibril is yet I am not a native arabic speaker. So correct me if I am wrong

You are understanding the Sirra in through modern lenses which is the worst thing anyone who attempts to study history would do. Remember these things happened more than 14 centuries ago in pre-Islam Arabia! Illiteracy was widely common and there is no shame in being illiterate! It is one more proof of the divinity of Quran and the prophethood of Muhamed peace be upon him. I think you mistook the verse to which the Farouk Omar ben Khatab ,may Allah be pleased with him, heard the prophet peace be upon him reciting and was a reason of his reversion to Islam; the verses were in AL-Haqqah towards the end of the chapter. Just testing your theory of why the prophet was called ummi "أمِّي", which in Arabic means someone who doesn't read or write or illiterate, you claim it is derived from the nickname given to umm al Qura. So if New York is nicknamed the big apple, new yorkians are applies ? And if London is the smoke, then londoners are smokies 💨. 😅 good talk buddy

There is a fundamental problem with Prophet being illiterate. We all know that Prophet had an extreme emphasis on Muslims being educated. Simultaneously, we all agree that in the Battle of Badr, a prisoner was granted freedom by teaching Muslims to read and write. Does your logical mind agree that the Prophet, who gave so much importance to reading and writing, never followed what he was preaching? Does your mind allow such a gap in the character of the Prophet? And strangely enough, none of the companions, who otherwise were so blunt that the Quran had to warn them, said to the Prophet that you are asking us to read and write though you don't know it yourself! This is what happens when you take Quranic words on their prima facie. One belittles the Prophet. And that's where the role of Ahlulbayt comes in (as mentioned in Hadith Thaqalayn in Sahih Muslim). They provide answer to such concerns.
