It might help illustrate this concept by pointing out that ventriloquists and impressionists intuitively do this already. Ventriloquists are focused on making the same sounds everyone else does without moving their lips and jaws. Impressionists affect the timbre of their voices by changing the shape of their whole voice box mechanism, moving their tongues to weird places, setting their jaw to a side, closing off nasal passages, etc. (all while changing their accent and syntax patterns). Neither can do this without making their tongues and jaws independent of one another.

I love your lessons - I really do. You're so positive and encouraging. It's so nice to hear your little comments as you go through the scales - it's hard not to smile. Thanks for making your lessons so much fun. I wish I were in NYC to take some lessons in person, but alas, I'll have to settle for these! :)

Ken Tamplin voice coach needs this lesson. I can't watch the guy. He's got some serious tongue lock going on with his jaw. Almost like a snapping turtle fishing for a fish. I love how the sounds in the video just make the jaw and tongue separate. I'm not sure I've had problems with it myself but it's one more thing to be aware of that I had no idea existed.

Here's my issue where exactly should the tongue sit? I know behind the bottom teeth, But I don't know I think I have a big tongue (Tmi) or my lower teeth are small when my tongue is behind my bottom teeth it feels bunched a bit. I also feel it blocks my air flow. Any tips all mouths aren't created equally or similarly? Perhaps it should sit as it does at rest as a general rule.

If you haven't already, check out his NG video. The back of your tongue is raised, which may help you with your larger tongue.
