I wish you all the luck in the world with your company and I hope that soon you will be able to sail with this wonderful piece of history, you are doing a great job preserving a fragment of recent history, something that cannot be said of my country, which has ruined thousands of historic vehicles and buildings over the years, now they have realised it but it is too late. Simon, you can use polyester resin on the plywood deck, but epoxy is definitely better. I’d really think hard about that decision. In either case make sure you cover all surfaces of the plywood not just the top surface. It’s important that the plywood is completely sealed to prevent moisture from getting in and creating rot and delamination. Also, consider using a modern deck material like “Davinacel” it comes in sheets and is made for boat decks. It doesn’t absorb moisture and won’t rot.

good quality plywood... fibreglass externally in the workshop... remove enough old stuff to do a couple of sheets at a time.. that way you never get caught out by rain etc... and then a quick fibreglass over the joints will make it water tight... then when its complete you can put a second or third skin of glass and then flow coat over the lot :)

Some great comments. Like so many others, I can't wait to see your next video. With the beams you need, the best concept is to laminate them. Because they should be in a dry environment, most any kind of wood will be OK. Check with some of your local Saw Mills and by rough cut rather then finished lumber. Invest in a 12 inch portable planer and clean the wood up with it. You can construct a roof beam like a trust. The first piece flat to give you the flat ceiling you want. Then put a spacer piece in the center of the 15 feet length to create the curve of the top piece, bringing the ends together with the flat piece on the bench. Use some 5 mil plywood on each side of the beam to reinforce it and keep it's shape. A good water proof glue is all you will need for this construction. Use ring shanked nails or staples like you see in pallets. The concept of cutting a varnish or oil based paint 50 / 50 with paint thinner works exceptionally well. Coat these two or three times in your shop. The same goes for the plywood. I know it is expensive, but epoxy is the best waterproofing and gluing material out there. Buy the epoxy by the largest (aprox.) 4 gallon jug. Also use the slow hardener. It will work in 45 deg F temps.You can thin the epoxy using Acetone and then roll it on with a very short nap roller or 1/8 inch sponge roller. Four coats of epoxy over a thin fiberglass cloth will provide a roof that will last for many years. You will still need to paint the roof to protect the epoxy from UV rays. Two layers of plywood like 3/8 x 3/8 will give you a 3/4 inch thick roof. Like others have said stagger the seams and lap them. A troweled thickened layer of epoxy will bond the two layers of plywood exceptionally well. Again you can use your compressor and a staple gun to lock the layers down. Just my thoughts from experience building boats. Thanks and we wish you the best of luck!

You only need 13 sheets of plywood! 3 rows of 8' =24' and 1 for the front 2' =26'. If you make your beams at least 4" high you can put in 2" of rigid foam insulation and still have room for wiring and low profile lights! You might also want to raise the roof a few inches for a more comfortable height.

I don't think you want to cut the camber, you want to build a steam box & a jig, & bend the beams to the right shape, otherwise you'll be cutting across the grain & they won't be strong enough... the jig would literally be a plank with dowels in it to hold the bend you want while the wood cools & dries. The steam box is just a wooden box you can push steam into...
@johnjb3205
2 жыл бұрын
Yes Ken But the problem will be steaming aboard ?
@fat_biker
2 жыл бұрын
@@johnjb3205 I don't think they have to steam aboard - you can bring curved pieces of pre-cut wood to the boat just as easily as you can bring straight ones. If you know what beams you need you can pre-cut & pre bend them at your leisure over time - it's not like you want the roof off while you shape each beam anyway. In fact, if you've measured up in advance, you can cut & bend the marine ply in advance as well, & you'll probably want to do whatever treatments you want to do to the beams before you bring them aboard as well, for similar reasons...

i was watching a lad in Ireland who is working on another old RAF style launch, much smaller, i think he used a good marine ply, then sealed the sheets, and over the top used canvas and resin to give a continuous one piece finish, then all you need to do is final sand and paint, it looked good and should last ages, canvas will put up with the UV better than most surfaces and give where it needs to - i forget the channel name now and don't appear to be following it for some reason which explains why i not seen anything for a while - but still watching and loving you found it - Lakeside Productions - he does some cool film work too but lives on the boat

Another thought on cross beam wit the camber, build a “jig” using one of the existing beams. Just cut the longest one out. Use as a template and construct a “glue- lam” beam from 1/2” plywood. As many layers as you need top to bottom and then add ply to the sides, front and back. Wrap it all in 3 layers of fiberglass ( / \ /).

Then maybe vynelester resin with a good epoxy coating system would be a better option. Marine grade ply is 4x the cost of top grade external use ply. Once coated with vynelester and dynel then painted with epoxy it will last for many years.

Prior to 1960, Chris Craft and many others used pre-shrunk cotton canvas pasted and stretched over wood then painted with a thin oil based enamel paint. This was also used on their cabin sides. If maintained should last many years. A lot less expensive and labor intensive than resin and cloth. There are quite few articles written about the process though difficult to find.

Marine plywood. Are you going to at the shop coat both sides with thin epoxy so it's truly weather proof on both sides. Or thinned polyester resin. Or at least thompsons water seal on the bottom side. There is tongue and groove roof sheathing available too. Or plan ahead and use a router to slightly narrow the marine ply to make it tongue in groove . Allowing you to seal the edges prior to assembly on the boat.

The additives in some fuels (ie. E10) are incompatible with o-rings on the engine assembly (corrode, disintegrate, whatever the correct term is for whatever material is in the o-ring and gadgets). Which, since e10 helps with the environment at certain times of the year, you would think they would put compatible o-rings in new motors, especially when they only cost pennies to make and install at the time of assembly.
