Holy shit. A lot of people in the comment section butthurt about a PODCAST not teaching them everything they need to know about reading reticle. This was simply a conversation about the vast array of different reticles out there in the market and that you should research each one based around your needs. The point was that you should not get analysis paralysis when seeing the different reticles available.

"Did I just insult you?" Skills so subtle, you need confirmation of the shot. :-) I think this episode might be more appropriately when could you use a Christmas tree reticle. I will just call it the Tremor. There is a USCG instructor who goes over it in milrad and even compares to the Vortex EBR7-C. As Justin points out, all those busy lines are just smaller and finer gradations of the same thing. In fact, the EBR7-C is perhaps a refinement of the EBR2-C in that the 7 gives angular size value to the dots in and of themselves. Because these are all finer ways to measure size in reticle. And you can always work in reverse. You can take a known range to target and the value of the dot (.2 mil, for example) and work the math backwards to find the size. I think in MOA. So, [Size (inches) * 95.5]/ size (MOA) = distance to target (yards). So, size of target would be [distance*MOA]/(95.5) = Size (inches.) Ranging in reticle is valuable where rangefinders may fail such as dead battery, fog, dust or sand storm. Also, if your spotter has the same reticle in his or her scope, he or she can give exact corrections. At 200 yards, your hit was 1MOA low. So, hold over 1 MOA or dial up 1 and try again. The rest of the Christmas tree is hold over for distance and wind, with each dot being approx 5 mph. Though it is known that .223 and .308 have roughly similar characteristics to 600 yards. So even though you could dial and there is a good reason to do so, you could shoot anything just based on the reticle. 200 yards with full value 9 o'clock 10 mph. You would go down to the first big hash because that is 2 MOA and go over to the right (because you want to aim left) and go over two dots. Line that specific dot on your target point. Generally speaking, 1 MOA each 1.047 inches at 100 yards. So, each MOA line will represent another 100 yards but remember that your actual shift would be about .47 or almost half an inch at 1,000 yards. However, the external ballistics of your actual round will be a bit finer than that. There is any number of ballistic calculators you can use and the LRBC (Long Range Ballistic Calculator) at the Vortex site, free to use, you don't have to sign in to use it, is a fine calculator and will generate a chart in whatever measurements you need. You input cartridge data. Caliber (just the number, for example, 308 with no dots or the word win.) G1 ballistic coefficient. Example, a hollow point boat tail I am using has .447. If you have a big name brand, you could choose factory and they may have it in their library. Input all the data. Choose zero distance, such as 100 yards. Choose increments of scale, such as every 25 yards. And max distance, such as 800 or 1,000 yards. It will generate a chart that shows bullet drop and MOA adjustment for every spot 25 yards along the way. So, that 168 gr HPBT has some useful numbers to fill out my DOPE with try DOPE. I measure an 18 target (average size of the chest of a whitetail buck) in the reticle at 6 MOA. [18*95.5]/ 6 MOA = 286.5 yards. The chart shows that 250 yards is at 2.4 MOA and 300 yards is at 3.7 MOA. Kind of in between so dial 3 MOA for distance. 10 mph wind full value (either direction) is also going to be around 2 MOA at 286.5 yards. So, either hold over or just dial windage if the wind is constant (like in the desert.) So, you can use that "fancy reticle" to get more exact measurements and then dial the adjustments. Why dial? Because it is more natural to focus on the center of the reticle. And you get way better at math. And in unknown circumstances, you get closer estimations. The advantage of the reticle is that once you know that the lines are just a way of measuring distance and wind, you can shoot accurately with almost no experience. And you can shoot fast. If you already remember your DOPE and a spotter reads out distance, you already know to go to 3 MOA down, 2 MOA right, send it. Can you pierce an ear lobe doing that? Of course not. But as an operational military sniper, you just got a direct hit on a bad guy. Practice enough, and you will be pinpoint accurate. It helps to remember the target, depending on use. You have to be super sub MOA to ring 8 inch steel at 800 yards, like you do in a precision rifle competition. With a deer, you are trying to get an 8 inch diameter area, usually at less distance than that. This gets back to the accuracy of the hunter and the effective range for that hunter. Is it ethical to shoot a deer or elk at 700 yards? Yes, just as ethical as mother nature letting wolves eat the deer starting at the gut, which is what they do. It is ethical if the hunter is capable of that shot with regularity. For someone still shooting 2 MOA or so at 100 yards, that person should not hunt deer past 100 yards. Only hunt the distance wherein you can make a shot in the kill zone. Except for a few glaring examples, most rifles, even the bargain rifles, are good for 1 MOA. So, bigger misses than that are the shooter and yes, it hard to get shooters to admit frailties. Everyone turns into Chris Kyle behind the scope. Only hunt distances where your optics can reach to verify your harvest. Only hunt close to you if you need to confirm that the target is a doe and not an illegal buck (in my state, a legal buck has either main beam spread of 13 inches or wider than alert ears, or is a spike.) If your binocs are not good enough to check that, don't shoot. To me, the ethics is not the distance of the shot, it is the decision to shoot and the ability of the shooter to connect within an inch at the desired spot at whatever distance. So, I do not know of any 100 yard shooters trying for the 1300 yard shot from hilltop to hilltop. Wandered into the weeds, sorry. So, who could use the Christmas tree reticle? Everyone. But it does mean a bigger and heavier scope. My Venom weighs a smidge over 2 pounds.

Just use MOA wind constant and favor without ANY need for a mil or MOA scaled reticle. Here's the equation: Distance to target in yards divided by 100 times wind value in mph divided by MOA constant, like 10 if shooting 175 .308 at 2610 fps.

All means to sight adjustment must begin with an understanding that an amount of MOA or mils describes the distance in inches a sight adjustment will make at target distance. Learning the equations to know the amount of MOA or mil adjustment to sight will preclude any need for a reticle to do any more than range distance to target.

Gentlemen, I am buying an FFP Tactical MILRAD scope in a few days for mounting on a Remington 700 in 308 Short Action in order to begin long-range 200-1000+ yard target shooting. I am undecided on Vortex or Nightforce. As an old veteran and a retired LEO, avid hunter, I have used non-technical hunting scopes a good bit. However, I have no experience with Long-Range, FFP MILRAD scopes. I came to this video intending on learning a little information that would assist me in deciding between the scope brands. No disrespect, but, your entire video could have been taken around the table at camp with just a bunch of good ole boys shooting the breeze. The only thing missing was a cold beer or a bottle of J.D.. I got absolutely nothing of decision making information from the video.

We have much better videos for simply making a decision on what scope to buy that this to be honest. Being that this is a long form podcast, there are many topics discussed and a wide variety of points made at different times. Something much more concise and to the point would certainly be a better option for someone in your position. We have some of these on the main "Vortex Optics" youtube channel, or even better, you can always get a real person right away on the phone here to talk to you all about these things if you give us a call. The number is 800-426-0048 and if you hit extension 5, someone who is an avid hunter/shooter/outdoorsman with a lot of knowledge on the subject will pick up and be happy to chat.

I wish you guys would have talked more about the XLR. The one time you did the guy said he never uses the MOA mil-dots. Why are they there then? I wish Vortex would do a video expressly on using the Vortex Viper FFP with the LXR. My biggest question is do the MOA mil-dots account for the fractions that accumulate at longer ranges? If not I understand why no one uses it. I use a range finder. I'm never going to rely on my scope for distance. I got zero out of this video and I'm an experienced rifle shooter.
