Proper chats like this are so needed. Never heard this sort of stuff in college and I've never met a sparks who knows all this stuff also. It's like a dark art and those that seem to know are very cagey about giving information on the subject. Great stuff Lads.

Thank you Team e5 for sharing your insights especially regarding neutral current diversion and its effects. This was long anticipated given the excellent delivery of Earthing parts 1 and 2. This pt 3 is the creme de la creme !. Keep them coming!

The reason this is discussed more is because there are far more cable failures occurring without people knowing that the current is being diverted through their premises via either gas or water pipes or both to earth and back to the star point of the TX. The problem with repair in the street is the cost, these are all privatized companies that want to make profit and don’t want to spend the money. It is less costly and easier to change TNS to TNCS.

I heard many moons ago so i dont know how true it is (back to the 16th edition when EEBADS was prevalent) that they said it had rods every 30 meters because they relied on the water and gas supplies as they were already linked to the general mass of earth so they didnt bother with a rod?

Recently had Western Power Distribution out to a Series 5 cutout (old Bakelite type) which was misaligned, fibre washer partially out and leaking pitch. The engineers replaced the head (usual live working) but if I hadn’t of reported it the issue was the cut-out is in a living room of a Victorian terrace in a poor state- ie a potential risk which is now reduced. Also British Gas had installed smart meters and not reported it. Another area (I digress) is poorly installed isolator switches with the cases being cut such that they could allow live conductors to be accessed - British Gas had put a notice on it to advise it was dangerous but not told the occupier they had done so! With regards to earthing the WPD engineers confirmed it was still SNE (TNS) but you are right re. Jointing outside the premises, it could well be PME (TNCS) in reality just outside the premises. The WPD team would of cut the PILC cable outside had they of judged it wasn’t safe to live work and I guess that would of led to a TNCS connection had that of taken place. They also prefer to install the DNO apparatus outside in a cabinet if they end up cutting the current service cable.

Outside is due to coroners recommendation due to fires in home’s and DNOs now adopt it unless derogation is signed off by directors of DNOs

I had DNO out four days ago to a TNS PILC supply with Ze of 0.95 and BS951 clamp. DNO attended withdrew main fuse tightened connections and Ze now 0.47, looked at clamp with brain ticking for a few minutes and said clamp looks ok and to change will be very difficult so leave as it. Me waiting for DNO to attend cost customer 4hrs of my time. I love your content and the time you put in but shit all this information is screwing my brain and making even simple installations difficult. Keep up the great work.

Sorry. We share this info as our industry doesn’t want us to know yet will throw you under a bud if you don’t comply. It’s not worth the risks to you. But like all things. Absorb, understand and interperate as you grow your understanding. All you can do.

Hi Lads Great information! I live on the n Ireland- rep of Ireland border so contract on both sides, the dno in republic ask for an earth electrode back to Met on every installation. Every installation is TNCS and all incomers on cu are single pole, can you see any problems with this with neutral diversion currents, would this be a fix for uk installations?

Do Smart Meter installations change a TNS to TNCS?
@adamrmorris
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Norman, no they don’t. The meter operator (billing company) don’t change earthing arrangements. If they spot an issue they advise the DNO who own the cut out and provide the means of earthing (for TNS and TNCS). Typically smart meter installers now seem to be changing the tails between the cut out to harmonised blue brown leads at the same time too (E.on for example) and they label the DNO fuse with the actual fitted rating too.

District Network Operators are practically monopolies, given that it is practically impossible to install a parallel electricity network. Private DNO's? Seems better to have DNO's owned by every subscriber connected to the network, giving subscribers voting rights to the 'board of directors'/committee. It allows the operator to operate in the subscribers best interest, as long as the subscribers mandate that behaviour. Once sold to private owners, it is hard to buy back.
