Great list, and thanks for sharing! Not surprised to see "Single Man" on there! ;) Very interesting point re: the "personal level" aspect. There was a part of my video that I edited out, for time, where I explained how, for me at least, "favorite" breaks down into two factors: first, my perception of the album's quality, based on my individual tastes; and then, second, what my personal relationship with the album has been -- so, for how long have I known the album (or owned a copy) and what kinds of emotional/personal associations do I attach to it as a result? And that second factor can be very powerful. We develop deep personal relationships with albums sometimes, and those can be very hard to ignore.

There are some surprising choices for sure, but I'm happy that Elton's music is getting some love and respect. I've grown up with Elton since 1971 so his earlier albums tend to be my favorites for sentimental reasons (yes I'm that old - 😆).

Rounding out the top 10 would include DON'T SHOOT ME I'M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER and HONKY CHATEAU and THE ONE and ROCK OF THE WESTIES and SLEEPING WITH THE PAST which has grown on me over recent years. MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER would also be on the list and, finally, TOO LOW FOR ZERO which has several songs that I love but a few that I do not listen to at all. Since I like electronic music, I must say that GOOD MORNING TO THE NIGHT (with Pnau) is quite enjoyable. Regarding your comment about "Mansfield": agreed, a really good track. It's funny how, over time, lists change; up until a year or two ago, "Tumbleweed" was #9 or #10 on my list. Now, it's #11 or #12 I think. "Chateau" is also somewhere in the tens, which I call my "Much Beloved" Elton albums. It was once much further down, but after last year's 50th deluxe, it rose a few spots on my list. For so many years I'd found "Chateau" kind of "meh" but just in the last year, I've changed my mind. Who knows, two years from now it might be in my top ten.

I was a huge Elton John fan when he first came out. When I saw him in concert in 1971 he debuted his Madman Across the Water. When I heard Tiny Dancer I loved it and still do. When I saw him in 1972 he debuted Don’t Shoot Me… When I saw him in 1973 he debuted Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I love all 3 of those albums. I saw him at Dodgers Stadium in 1975, this was Rock of the Westies. I really didn’t like that album so much. When I saw him again in 1976 at the Los Angeles Forum he had Kiki Dee with him but I honestly can’t remember what album he debuted. I love Tumbleweed Connection, and Friends as well. I even had a friend of mine go with me to see the movie Friends. I also love Blue Moves. I took my son to see him in 1993 at a benefit concert with Ray Cooper. I had a raw tape given to me by one of the production team of the December 14 1986 Tour de Force concert from start to finish, including all the dialogue. It was phenomenal and his voice, although shot, added to the emotion in every single song. Even Heartache All Over the World sounded good. I saw the concert 3 times in different cities and each time there was a different but just as electric energy. It is the absolute best concert I have ever witnessed. No one is a better performer. THANK YOU for #10! Songs From the West Coast is one of my personal favorites. It is exactly as you described, the beginning of the "back to basics" period, which for his formal studio projects (I don't count Lockdown in this) is still ongoing, including the Leon Russell The Union album. I too associate it with 9/11, and it along with Bruce Springsteen's The Rising got me through much of that time. Mansfield is a wonderful highlight and I love the writing, performances, arrangements across the board. It's an end to end listen, not a clinker in the bunch. Oh and same notes for Made in England ... Latitude is AMAZING, and I agree, could be his and Bernie's best song of the '90s.

@@andygeisel2177 Yeah, I imagine there's probably more from "Nebraska" than what's been officially released. I'm not too sure about bootlegs and what they'd offer, if anything; apart from a few comp's of really early stuff, I don't have too many Bruce boots. I'd be very eager to hear (if indeed it ever existed) the unreleased ESB version of the album, which (story goes) Bruce rejected (or aborted the sessions) in favor of the original demo tapes. Nothing of those sessions turned up on "Tracks", which suggested that perhaps Bruce was keeping those for some deluxe "Nebraska" release; but 25 years later, and still nothing. But as I say, I refuse to give up hope!

PS - "Born in the USA" is sleek, production-wise, and perhaps too sleek. I must say though I always smile when I hear those songs; they bring back memories of the time, when many of the older boys in the neighborhood knew the title song and "Glory Days" and rode their BMX bikes around the neighborhood like a motorcycle gang or something. And if anyone said anything negative about Bruce or about Michael Jackson, they'd get testy! They worshipped Bruce and MJ. I saw the video for "Glory Days" for the first time just a few years ago, and I just about spit my drink across the room when, at the end, Bruce's wife shows up at the ball diamond -- and she's driving a 1978 Chev Malibu wagon! In the early '80s, that was our family car, only ours was painted a little darker -- maroon, not saffron. I love those little "nostalgia" coincidences.

Glad to see both The Fox and Made in England on here. I myself am one whose top 10 is filled with mostly early-to-mid 70s Elton, but that's more a reflection of how highly I think of those albums rather than thinking his later work isn't worthy at all. I actually like the majority of his albums and The Fox and Made in England in particular are ones that I consider at the same level as the "classic period". My Top 10 (I don't include live albums, as I feel they're in their own category): 10. Regimental Sgt. Zippo 9. The Fox 8. Made in England 7. Caribou 6. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 5. Tumbleweed Connection 4. Madman Across the Water 3. Rock of the Westies 2. Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player 1. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
@CollectingElton

Wow! So great to see “Zippo” on someone’s list. It’s not exactly “Sgt. Pepper” but I think (and I assume you’d agree) that it was much better than perhaps Elton thought at the time. I do think it’s (at least) a stronger work than “Empty Sky”, which has some good things on it but lacks cohesion. About “Westies”: I’m ashamed to say I used to dismiss that one. But a few years ago, I got a specific copy which just opened the album up for me, musically, and shot “Westies” up my list from somewhere in the late thirties (the part of my list I call the “Even God Makes Mistakes” albums) to, I think, #21 now. Elton sounds exhausted on that album (to my ears, at least) but the band performances are solid.
@talkaboutcinema3304
6 ай бұрын
I had to think a long time about why I preferred Zippo to the two albums that immediately followed it, and I think I hit upon it recently: even though it is basically Elton losing himself in the '60s psychedelic wave, he sounds completely confident during the sessions. On Empty Sky and to a lesser extent the Self-Titled album, there are moments where he doesn't entirely sound comfortable behind the microphone and I think that might be due to him still trying to adjust to finding his own style. On Zippo, he always sounds confident and like he's having a good time. "Tartan Coloured Lady" especially is a real hidden gem. As for Westies, I know a lot of people generally don't tend to consider it among his best and without going into too much detail, two reasons immediately come to mind why I love it so much: one is that I tend to prefer Elton's rock-and-roll songs in general. Obviously I love a lot of the ballads too, but I first got into Elton because I thought he was a great rock-and-roll artist and Westies is the album that really proves he could rock as hard as anyone else in that era. The other reason is his voice. Interesting you mention Elton sounding exhausted, because I actually think the Caribou Ranch albums are where his voice is at its best. I'm no vocal expert, but I've always wondered if the high altitudes had something to do with that; Nigel Olsson once said that he was able to sing in octaves higher than he was normally able to reach when recording there. Even Elton has talked about how much of a struggle it was to record vocals there, but it almost seems to me like that struggle actually made his voice stronger. A lot of my favorite Elton vocals were recorded there; the Westies Medley, "Billy Bones and the White Bird", "I've Seen the Saucers" from Caribou, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight"...the list just goes on.
@CollectingElton
6 ай бұрын
@@talkaboutcinema3304 Well, with "Westies", maybe you're right; maybe his vocals aren't so thin. It's the first and second tracks I was thinking of when the word "exhausted" came to mind. And on those, he does sound (to me) like he's struggling to reach something and doesn't quite make it. But yeah, there are some strong vocals on some of the other tracks, now that I think about it. I think you're on to something with the Zippo/Empty Sky comparison. On "Empty Sky", he seems more self-conscious. It may have been because, with Zippo, the idea to assemble some of the tracks into a proposed album came afterward. I don't think those sessions began with the intention of anyone making an album, at least not necessarily. It was Elton and Caleb and their session buddies messing around and experimenting, hence they recorded far more material than would've been required for an album. But when Elton began "Empty Sky", not only did he already know that Dick James was probably going to release it; James had just created the DJM label and "Empty Sky" was going to be one of DJM's first releases. There was a lot at stake.

Nice list...but... Leaving off "Don't Shoot Me" and "Tumbleweed Connection" really. My 2 guilty pleasures are "Jump Up" and "21 at 33" Live in Australia is my favorite live album. I believe that Elton was having throat surgery, soon after this tour. He had a raspiness that made his songs sound so meaningful.

Or, as I describe it in the video, "He sounded like Joan Rivers." TC and DSM will be on the next list, for sure. That list is #11 to #20, my "Much Beloved" Elton albums.

Very tough to do this list. The first 3 are easy then it gets hard. I love the early 80s records and I know many people don't and I don't like much after the 80s except Songs from the West Coast and Wonderful Crazy Night. Plus his voice changed so much and it's much deeper. I prefer his 70s and 80s voice where he could hit the high notes. 1. GBYBR-double album with 15 of the 18 songs very good. 2. Don't Shoot Me 3. Captain Fantastic 4. Breaking Hearts 5. Jump Up 6. Rock of the Westies 7. The Fox 9. 21 at 33 10. Too Low for Zero Honorable mention: Songs from the West Coast, Reg Strikes Back, Honky Chateau

"Sad Songs" I can take sometimes, but "Who Wears" is just fluff to me. And the video: What is that on Elton's head? Roadkill? Lol. "Burning Buildings" and "In Neon" are two of the three best songs on the album. (The other: "Passengers".)

@@CollectingElton I can understand that. I love catchy melodic pop-rock songs with hooks like "Slow Down Georgie". I don't like slow songs with no hooks or much melody. "Don't Shoot Me" is one of my all time favorite albums and I like 9 of the 10 songs. Always hated "Have Mercy on the Criminal" Never cared much for his "Live in Australia" album either as it's full of slow songs with no hooks. Really enjoyed your video and insights and look forward to watching more of them. Good job!!

Good to see THE FOX on your chart. THE FOX is an album that probably sounds better today than it did when it came out in 1981. I bought it the day that it came out but, despite its undeniable quality, it really did feel "dated" at the time. Only "Nobody Wins" saw EJ pushing the envelope and moving forward. I like THE FOX but it does struggle to hold together cohesively.

It’s not among everyone’s favorites, and I appreciate that. I think that, for me, because I experienced it first as the “Visions” home video, it’s always had a cinematic quality about it, and films were very important to me when I was a kid, especially those that heavily involved music. Most of those videos haven’t aged well; but I still can’t separate the music from the visual. Even today, those videos play in my mind whenever I play the album, and it endears the album to me even more. Several years ago, I found myself (for work reasons) at the boys’ school where they filmed the “Elton’s Song” video. I didn’t realize where I was at first, but I eventually figured it out. That was one of the most surreal moments for me, as an Elton fan.

Regarding THE FOX, it was interesting hearing Elton say in 1981, while promoting the album, that they were hoping to reconnect with his FM AOR (album oriented rock) fan base with THE FOX, hence the more serious rock songs like "Fascist Faces" and "Heart in the Right Place" and "Breaking Down Barriers." Sadly EJ didn't tour the album that year and he played just a few songs (none of the rock ones) from it in 1982. By the time Elton got to Toronto & Ottawa on the JUMP UP! tour only "Chloe" remained. It sounded pretty good. Strangely, I did see "Elton's Song" in Toronto (the Ray Cooper tour, "Back in the USSA). No one knew the song because it was still 1 1/2 years from release. It was part of a batch of songs that would form 21 AT 33 and some of THE FOX. Fortunately I did see "Carla/Etude" when Elton played solo (Hamilton 1999, London England 2000, and Darmstadt Germany 2003). Elton played "Carla/Etude" and then segued into "Tonight." It doesn't get better than that!!@@CollectingElton

@@douglasstruthers8307 Hey, I was at the Hamilton '99 show too! In late '79/early '80, some news articles announced that "21" would be a double album. I don't quite know what happened; it may have been EJ's relationship with MCA, which was less than great at that point. I sometimes wonder what a double "21" would've been like, i.e. with some of the John-Franks produced tracks that ended up on "The Fox". Would he have included "Tactics"? I wonder. It may have turned out to be a "Blue Moves 2" sort of thing.

Yeah, Elton did say in 1979 that a double album was coming but he was also upset with MCA for not promoting "Song For Guy" as a single. 21 AT 33 would be the last album on MCA and a lot of songs were then saved to make THE FOX on Geffen Records. @@CollectingElton

@@douglasstruthers8307 I agree with you on him not touring in 81 probably hurt the sales of The Fox plus there was not a big single off that album. "nobody Wins" didn't even make the top 20. Chloe stalled around #35 I think. I saw my first Elton live show in 82 for the Jump Up tour and then saw him again in 84 and 86. All good shows.

They're Mofi anti-static inners. I get mine on Amazon Canada, and up here they're expensive and surprisingly difficult to find. But when I lived in the US, I found them easily online (Amazon US) and in record stores. And they were more affordable in the US too. I tried less expensive competitors (Vinyl Styl specifically) but they didn't wear well, would tear after a few moths of regular handling. If you're gonna go "anti-static", go Mofi.

"A Single Man" has never been one of my faves, but I have a lot of copies because I love the cover so much. If it wasn't for the last two tracks on Side 1, I might like it more. But to each their own. "Victim" is an interesting album. I've collected many of its original reviews, and although no one ever called it the "Sgt. Pepper of disco" it was actually well-received by critics overseas, particularly in the UK. One UK reviewer called it "superb" and another implied that it might be the beginning of a whole new career for Elton. Here in North America, however, where people were staging disco record burns? It was not well-received at all, to put it kindly. In fact, US reviews of "Victim" are among some of the most entertaining critical "pans" I've ever read of any album. Critics not only resented EJ for having ended his "royal flush" of classics ca. 1970-76 but resented him all the more for succumbing to the disco "fad", which by late '79 was on life support. I'll share some of those reviews down the line.
