I judged 1/35 armoured cars and 1/35 heavy axis WWII armour. Each category had more than 30 entries, but at least half could be discounted right away with either crooked wheels or wheels not touching the ground/track. That is much like you described with the aircraft. It would have been easy to write quick notes for judging feedback, but we were told not to bother as it would take too long. Honestly, I am considering just printing off a sheet of sticker labels since I would say 90% of models that didn't make it to top 3 had these issues: -Crooked wheels -Wheel not touching ground/track -Decal film visible -Paint gumming up PE mesh -Seam lines visible on tools/small details A sheet of sticker labels with those notes would be easy to apply to the entry form and would be way better than nothing. Or, I could just make some sticker labels with my email and say contact me for feedback. I feel like the second option is better for IPMS as a lot of people don't like feedback "without asking first" (anti-rivet counter gang)...but if your model is to be judged it's kind of going to get "rivet counted" to some degree (which to those doofuses just means looked at critically). Will, it was great meeting you, even though it was briefly. I thought we would have been able to chat more later on Saturday but things didn't turn out. I'll try to go again in 2023 which is much closer to you, so hopefully less hassle for you to attend. The social aspect of the show was by far my favourite part!

One thing is for certain, I will never compete in an ipms nationals adventure. I am fairly detail oriented and a meticulous sort, but what it takes to win at those events comes with a certain level of pain that takes the fun out of the hobby (just my thoughts). That said, your vid provides some helpful feedback on how models are judged and what it takes to win. Good to see you scored those kits, especially the 1/20 Cessna.

Detail oriented and meticulous is not bad for IPMS competition. Those skills will make your assembly and detailing of the kit strong in the competition. Weathering is more subjective and it can depend on the judge and their thoughts on it. But at least in the armour categories it is less of an issue and when I've judged IPMS armour the judges with me have always been very ...accepting... of a wide range of weathering finishes. Usually they look at the quality of application of the effects (fine opaque chipping, no visible brush strokes, vertical rain streaks, etc.) more than the weight of them to avoid "over-weathering" discussion.

Hi Will. I love your work, your channel and the podcast. I started modeling for the first time in my life only 6 months ago. You and your channel are a big reason why I’ve found this hobby and community so wonderful and inspiring. Thank you!!!

Will. Something that I noticed when you held up the pylon. At the 17:32 point of the video, I’m looking down the top of that pylon like sighting a 2x4, and there appears to be a warp in the pylon itself. If this is the case, (and not just a lens thing), the only way to correct it, would be to straighten the pylon itself. Love your dedication to the finished product. Also hoping the Takom 1/35 Apache finds its way to your bench.

I know exactly what you mean with the feedback from the judges. When I asked about a diorama that went in an IPMS contest and won silver some time ago, one of the judges said " Idk, maybe the trees ". It got the best civilian in the same contest , although there were some civilian dios with gold. Go figure.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Judges don't like weathered aircraft, they like the fresh from the factory look. I've had some of my top models in shows and come nowhere simply because of what I'm sure they think is over weathering. As for feedback, I've found very few actually take the time to leave any. They just judge and move on😡

I'll give you some feedback. I love your work but for some reason that plane looked like it had way too much weathering on it. Maybe you used some reference in that case I apologize but I can see if someone was judging who is anti-weathering then I see why they would have snubbed ya.

It's an all too common misconception that aircraft just stay cleaner than they do. Especially on aircraft carriers. If you follow my work you know I spend a lot of time studying references and this is no exception. These birds get filthy and I've had quite a few people who work around and fly them say that I got it right.

@@barpfoto Right on boss. Like I said, probably had an asshat judge on the panel whose first impression was similar to mine. Looking at it again on my computer now makes me sort of regret posting what I said as it really looked overdone on my phone and not so much on a larger screen. Probably looks perfect in person. Fuck me, fuck them judges. You the man.

It's not just IPMS models that look the same. Everybody seems to form little groups, especially online. Everybody buys the same kits, the same paint, the same aftermarket 'fixes', the same equipment, watch the same youtube videos, use the same techniques and even talk the same bullshit. It's is a general lack of creativity. The 'weathering dudes' are no different. I yawn at both of them.

So you “yawn” at IPMS style and at the weathering style also… so what makes you excited? What is considered different? Because I can guarantee you someone else has already done it.

@@smurphy1977 It's not necessarily the style that's the problem, it's the execution. Especially here in the west. Lately, everything looks VERY similar. Everyone seems follow the same popular online modellers, and build the exact same way. For god sakes, people even bought metal stencils for spraying 'random' blotchy areas on their airplanes. The irony of that is hilarious. They jump on the same trend at the same time. I think there is a lot of great stuff happening in Japan. Very creative, better results, and they seem to know how to enjoy themselves.

The IPMS judging subject is a broken record. It's leaned against weathering.
