It’s incredible the subtle moments this show had! Like how Rothstein and Nucky were making the deal you see Big Jim look at Torrio about the amount of money being discussed and you see Torrio making a face how profitable selling good booze was but Big Jim didn’t look interested. Now I forget if they mentioned it in the show but one of the main reasons Jim was killed was because he didn’t want his organization in bootlegging cause he felt it would be too much heat and at that time he was so rich he didn’t need the money, so it’s commonly speculated Torrio had Big Jim killed to takeover his organization and get into the liquor trade

This is one of Charlie’s best scenes as it’s emblematic of both his immaturity and inexperience relative to the other men at the table at this point in the series, but also the qualities that would set him apart from them in years to come. His impatience with Torrio speaks to his arrogance, but also his ambition. All these gangsters from a different era sitting around partying, getting drunk, stuffing their faces and talking about pussy, while he wants to do serious business. He has little experience in this world of organized crime, but also a grand vision of his place within it. The irony of this scene in retrospect is that Big Jim Colosimo, undoubtedly the most laughable character at the table, would be killed almost immediately after this meeting for his antiquated way of business. Little did the rest of the men know they would just be footnotes in Charlie’s story by the end of the decade.

For a truck load of premium booze at a time when it's illegal? I mean that truck was a gold mine.
@thomasdemay9805
3 жыл бұрын
60 grand for the load is very high price. Thompson was taking advantage of Rothstein because he knew he needed the booze personally (to get favor with a judge) rather than to make a profit off resale. You can notice this if you pay attention right after Thompson says the price the table all looks at Rothstein. Rothstein already had a wad of money in his hands so it wasn't a question of if he would do the deal. The question everyone had was if Rothstein had 60K cash on him because like you said that would be a ton of cash especially at that time. This is why Rothstein says "ill settle up in cash with you tomorrow". Rothstein obviously had a "going rate" with Thompson and knew the price. He shows up to the meeting knowing he is going to ask to buy booze and brought a wad of cash to pay for it. He has to settle up tomorrow because the price is higher than what he expected it to be. He probably expected a mark up on the price but from the looks of the scene Thompson really jacked the price up. Considering this those 500 cases are probably usually like 20K if Thompson 60 is such a surprise to Arnold that he realizes he doesn't have that much cash on him.

That was Charlie in his very early 20's, maybe he was immature like that. Did you mean a relaxing Charlie in the Commission era?

@@andresihotang2314 yes I did, although I like to think even when he was young he was very reserved. Obviously we will never know but he seems like a man who had exceptional control on his emotions, especially anger

$60,000 is going to be about $1,000,000 now. Let's hope those wedding guests don't drink too many cases.

At 1:40, what were Torrio and Lucky saying to each other in Italian?
@FredBenz
5 жыл бұрын
Torrio mumbled something in italian and I didn't get a word (and i am an italian that speaks both Sicilian and napoletano dialect), Luciano said 'cosa è differente qua?' (thus, 'what's the difference?') Torrio answers 'chist è o big business' (which trasalted from napoletano means 'this here is a big business')

$60,000 for 500 crates. I wonder how much AR was expecting to pay. Looked like Nucky was being greedy here cuz AR was in a pinch for the whiskey.

Aaron Osborne rude? what do you mean? My comment is the translation of what they said. I don't see the point in your answer to my comment though.
