Hats off to Sarawak Tourism for making us able to see these foodies from afar, while suffering sharp craving for it all. High ten to both of them, Mat Thom and Mek Shee, for always smiling 😊 while reviewing it and making us suffered in silent, wanting to join them, if can't beat them over the fine foods.

For sio bees I prefer the full porky version as it way chewier . The one you had had fish in it by the grey color . Full pork will be pinkish . For the Matterhorn , the white jelly is Nata De Coco which is a flavoured coconut jelly . And yes White lady is usually a combination of mango syrup , milk , pineapples and lychees

Haha our creativity have been safely kept under wraps for years, so people can only savour it when they're here. What Sheena had from Dayang Salhah was basically the basic layered ones. The layer cake maestros can craft patterns and even words withing those layers, turn them into small rolls, mix and match flavours you may thought impossible...and well, come over when it's almost Hari Raya then you'll be spoilt for choices :)
the original recipe of layer kek, is from Indonesia, but improvised by Auntie Chynthea, and her Kek Lapis Sarawak is still my favorite

The white cube shape jelly Thomas found in matahorn is what we call Nata De Coco. Some sort of quite meaty coconut jelly that usually put in fruit flavour syrup. I'm not sure whether this kind of jelly also sold outside of Malaysia/Indonesia but it is quite popular here.
@tomiemyspace5054
6 жыл бұрын
Nata de coco is Spanish for coconut jelly. But nowadays it is commercialised into many flavours - mango, strawberry, lychee, grape, apple, orange - and I really don't think the cube jelly is made of coconut at all. 🍏 🍎

Uuuuuu Dayang Salhah, people say it's the best... but just to be safe, nobody can defeat my mum's kek lapis :P In Miri we have Siti Payung and Tepian Sungai. The taste? Good enough to serve on the table at the end of Ramadan, just to add variety since my mum and I made 6 types every year at least using Cadbury or some other type of chocolate. You should try making one of these. My preferred reference will be Rabiah Amit's book. Hey, why not at the end of your journey you sell kek lapis sarawak in Aussie/NZ? Sell it for NZ/AU$100 for 8' by 8' cake maybe (meh, why not sell it for a bit more)? As a reference, we sell the cakes for at least RM150 here for that size.

Top top top simple foods: Bao/Bun (Pau) is amazing. Plantain is melting and yellowy-gorgeous. Lemony Snicket ice thing is sourly delicious-looking in Mat Thom hand. Good acid amounts to dissolve all the foods. Simple. Tasty. Yummy. Cheap. A recipe for more future sojourn in the look for it. Then cruising in Sarawak gondola...looking for the much-suggested Kek Lapis...RM1 in Sarawak is like RM1.5 in Peninsula.

+Sheena 😀 I wont consider myself as a hardcore fan like following him in FB and whatnot...but I can categorically say that I had almost all of his novels, be it fiction or non-fiction, be it in mint condition or used one...several of it I bought at used bookstore, but mostly I bought new one in bulk during bookfair couple of couple years ago... My first reading of his book was Runaway Jury in 1998, borrowed from library...second was Street Lawyer given to me as a gift not long after. I love Runaway Jury. I'm yet to read A Time to Kill laying somewhere on the shelf. I love Pelican Brief the movie.

I love his social/legal justice themes in most of his book. Like the last one I read - Sycamore Row - about inheritance of large wealth by a very rich rural millionaire to his Black woman maid. Turned out the woman is the daughter of the black man whose lands was confiscated illegally by the millionaire's father during segregation and white-rules in southern US states. The maid's father was lynched at the place where now sycamore tree planted in rows...the millionaire saw what happened when he was a small boy...he happened to be able to trace the maid's family name...and the rest is in Sycamore Row... One of the key word in this novel is DELIBERATION...legal one...

This guy here is spot on with his suggestions. As a rojak lover, the rojak stall here is one of the best I've eaten since I was young. You may also try the "gong pia" around here, which is a mini Chinese hamburger with mince pork (average description).

Fried plantains, banana fritters, pisang goreng (fried banana), etc. You will succumb to the crunchiness of its fried skin and the sweetness of its tender filling inside. Some even spread sesame seeds outside its skin. You MAY find it cheaper somewhere else though, just 5 to 10 minutes outside from the main city, depending on where you're heading. Quality wise differs from stall to stall.

Now for the real comment.. that "pau ayam" looks delicious, "kek lapis" is my fav. That "satay" is just glazing, TAKE MY MONEY, I WANT IT. Ohhhh the dessert looks very refreshing. Awesome 2nd part.

Chasing a Plate - Food and Travel Channel Yeah but most shop doesn't sell it because it's much more tedious than making "kek lapis" some say. It's an original Sarawak delicacies just as "kek lapis". Maybe some Sarawakian here can fill you more on the details.
@RayRafaaz

For kek hati pari (we call it ati parek), as it is a traditional delicacy of sort, every family could have different recipe. My aunt, who used to do this and sell it by the trays every Hari Raya perfected her craft with finely blended black sultanas as the star ingredient. Making it itself takes years to master. Well-made kek hati pari can last for up to 6 months if stored outside the fridge, and even a year if kept in the fridge.

Malay Words of the Day/Malay 101: Eating times: 1) Sarapan - Breakfast 1.a) Brunch - Not in the dictionary 😀 but Saraphari sounds catchy? 2) Makan tengahari - Lunch 3) Makan petang - Tea 4) Makan malam - Dinner 5) Makan lewat/tengah malam - Supper Nouns & Verbs: 1) Makanan & Makan - Food & Eat 2) Minuman & Minum - Drink & Drink 3) Sayur/Sayur-sayuran - Vegetable(s) 4) Buah/Buah-Buahan - Fruits(s) 5) Ikan - Fish 6) Daging - Meat (generic name for all types of meats, at least this is what it is supposed to mean). Daging ayam - Chicken meat. Daging lembu - Beef. BUT somehow, if you mention daging, normally it is understood as beef, and when you want chicken meat you just mention ayam. Quirky but true. 😀RM1

Excellent lesson tomie myspace!! Interesting how Sarapan doesn't have makan in front of it like all the other meal times! Very helpful indeed mate. Thanks for that 😄 Cheers, Sheena
@tomiemyspace5054
6 жыл бұрын
+Sheena You can call breakfast as makan pagi too, it just that it is not being used as much as sarapan being used, anymore. I suspect this word is of Indonesian origin since in Malaysia it is only used in "Sampah sarap" - meaning garbage, normally in great quantity, and may means garbage that is really of no use. But in Indonesia it means "lapik" - to support, as a base for example. This is Verb and the addition of suffix -an to make it a Noun. In this sense it is more in context with the intended meaning for sarapan. Historically and culturally, due to financial situation or due to work demand, people in South East Asian countries used to eat lightly in the morning like eating boiled tapiocas and related simple foods made from rice, just enough to kickstart their days with energy before going to workplaces (sea, rubber estates, paddy fields) as opposed to going with empty stomach and without energy, or with too much food and feeling sleepy afterwards. Sometimes people said sarapan pagi, but it is really redundant because people only eat “sarapan” in the morning (pagi) - sarapan used specifically only for morning meals. RM1 worth of sarapan meals, as ever...😀
@tomiemyspace5054
6 жыл бұрын
"Alas perut" or "lapik perut" - perut is stomach; alas is of the same meaning as lapik - are words coined together to mean eating light foods (normally simple foods) or small amount of foods just to make sure that our stomach is not empty and we're feeling hungry and lethargic due to no foods being turned into glucose for energy. 😀😇😎

+Root xoxo Can't agree on the terubok mate... It is unlike salmon since it is bony fish...unsuitable to be used as fillet-o-fish purposes... But terubok is good and delicious in its own merits... This fish is like state fish for Sarawak... It is a herring species, and of foraging kind of fish... Suitable for many type of cookings/dishes, and like many herring type as in Euro zones, normally being smoked/salted (ikan masin)... Reputed to help cancer-reducing due to its high content of omega-3 fatty acid... Enough of info for the charge of RM1...😀😇

+Roiy xoxo +Chasing Midin Belacan Doesn't know that midin is also famous in Sarawak. It is famous in Terengganu but only for old-schoolers. I suspect Gen-X’s doesn't know a thing about midin. Midin in Terengganu is called pucuk midin or pucuk paku midin, since it’s leaves/shoots of a plant, not a tree, with conifer-shape leaves, reddish in colour when ready to be picked for cookings. There is a place in Kuala Terengganu district called Padang Midin - Midin’s Field...probably used to have so many of midin plants in open fields. RM1 of midin belacan...por favor!!!

Hi Jason Rex! We missed out 😭 We rocked up to a stall selling jellyfish umai but they had sold out. Hoping we get to sample it on our next visit to Sarawak- it sounds so tasty! Where is your favourite spot to eat it? Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Cheers, Sheena

Chasing a Plate - Food and Travel Channel Hi Sheena..Sad to heard that..its okay..for the next visit you should try it..My favourite place to eat is Top Spot seafood centre..Its located in the middle of the kuching city opposite Pullman Hotel..You can find lots of local dished especially that made from seafood..You also can try going to buntal near to santubong..
