I am senegalese but can tell you sundiata was never a Muslim , the lion lord aka Mary diatta was a traditional African meaning he was into traditional religions we call them over here the ceddo now he was something we can call today a messianic figure but definitely not into Islam nor Christianity and another thing to mention is Africa has mysteries so people can see the story of the king as spooky or mythical but we know there are many things that are still going on today that we don't tell the world knowing they won't understand therefore not believe

I appreciate your insight. I think you're right, sometimes our language is too limited to capture the full range of complexity in a given story such as Sundiata.

Why always peg Africa’s greatness to another culture’s like Arabs or even King Authur? Sundiata wasn’t a Muslim nor a Christian, he was an animist of traditional African Spirituality. In Africa, we don’t sacrifice animals for magical purposes, we do so as an offering to appease our ancestral spirits and win their blessings. Understand wealth in the African context is displayed in possessions and it takes time, patience and dedication to raise these animals that are sacrificed in humility and submission. Time belongs to God. In it, we get old, die and meet our ancestors, our God who is always waiting on the other side. In essence, we lose wealth accumulated with time to gain favour. Your offering won’t work if your deeds are evil or if you do so with inequity, pride or arrogance. I’m even more shocked you make no mention of the Kurugan Fuga, the world’s first human right charter that was developed by Sundiata the lion king. The griot isn’t just a story teller, it’s untranslatable in English. Griots were the embodiment of the Kings legacy. The griot is called Jeli in Mandinka which translates to blood. They are much more than story tellers.

You are correct that comparisons will necessarily fail because no two things are perfectly alike. However, references to another ruler like King Arthur, helps those from outside of the cultural context to conceptualize Sundiata's story. Those that wish to dig deeper and explore it more, will do so, but the introduction must begin somewhere. Same with Griots. You are also right, I did not include a discussion of the Manden Charter. At the time I did not know of it, though I learned about it shortly after I made this video. I have discussed it briefly in other videos. This is one of the drawbacks with videos, it stays the same as we learn more. Thanks for your comment.

Interesting, and well presented. Ruined at times by the enunciation of sentences as questions (a very common trait nowadays, the "la valley girl" One of many examples, occurring every 2 or 3 sentences,: 8:38 "he might have used a branch of a treeeee??? . Etc). Thanks for the video. I watched until 9min, and then couldn't take the sentences made into questions unnecessarily.

Parts of West Africa? Mali empire stretched from sub Sahara to Egypt or what would later be Kush

Hmm can't say I've heard that before. All the maps I consulted point to Tadmekka and Gao (in modern Mali) as the furthest points eastward of the empire. But hey, if you have a source I'm always interested in learning something.
