Robert has never been able to work due to his epilepsy and uncontrolled seizures. Of course, having epilepsy doesn’t mean you can’t work. Many people with epilepsy work and are very successful. One of Robert’s terrific nurses was diagnosed with epilepsy as an adult and is excellent at her job. I could share many more examples of people who manage successful careers and who have epilepsy (just google famous people with epilepsy!). Working with epilepsy can be challenging but it can be done. (Also, it is illegal to deny employment to a person because they have epilepsy.)
Robert’s seizures were too uncontrolled for him to be able to work. He was trying several different medications and had a couple of brain resections so working wasn’t feasible.
That doesn’t mean Robert didn’t have a dream job when he was growing up! When we were in our teens, I wanted to be an actress and Robert wanted to be a stuntman. He was always a daredevil so this dream job might be surprising to people who only know him now as polite, understated and calm - and in a wheelchair. As a kid and young man he was fearless with never-ending energy! A career as a stuntman would have been perfect for him.
Robert also enjoyed learning about psychology so if epilepsy hadn’t affected him so much he may have become a therapist (probably after getting the stuntman bug out of his system).
Everyone has dreams! We don’t always get our dream job but Robert had fun talking about his.
What was your dream job?
