Robert has always wanted to educate others about epilepsy and his seizures. It’s probably no surprise that kids at school can be cruel to someone who is a little different. Robert had his share of kids making fun of him having seizures (especially when he lost control of his bladder during a seizure). Somehow Robert knew they just needed to know more about it and asked his teacher if he could talk to the class about epilepsy. Thankfully, the teacher agreed.
I think about this often and know that his desire to educate others about epilepsy and seizures is a driving force behind my wanting to help him do just that.
Robert can’t express himself as well as he used to but he still has no shame in discussing his seizures and his experiences.
I am clearly biased but Robert’s open attitude about his epilepsy is exactly what I think Epilepsy Awareness Month is all about.
