Robert is obsessed with numbers. Checking the time relentlessly, comparing his watch to the clock in the room (or asking us what our watch says), counting bites of food, timing how long he pees - to name just a few. He gets downright anxious if he sees an 800 number on the television and can’t write it down fast enough.
This is just how his brain works now but if he didn’t live with me and Richard it would definitely make him vulnerable to being taken advantage of. When he lived with his companion Judy and I was just starting to take over his care, I found out he had paid for magazine subscriptions for years far beyond the expiration date. He had sent money to a foreign country because he fell victim to a scam. He once called me to send him money because he had “won” a Canadian lottery and needed to pay to get his prize.
Nothing makes me angrier than scam artists preying on our most vulnerable population.
Robert’s obsession with 800 numbers is now harmless since he has no way of calling to sign up for whatever is being sold. He writes the numbers down when he sees one and when he can’t do it quick enough we tell him we have the number already. That seems to satisfy him. I don’t like to see him getting anxious about the numbers but the best we can do is reassure him that we have them - every last one.
As far as the scam artists, don’t even get me started. . .
