This video from Christmas 2021 (!) shows me setting up Drew's Epiphone 335 - including swapping out the pickups for a set of House Of Tone humbuckers. What I didn't know until after I filmed these video clips was that the bridge humbucker was faulty (I had only done a 'tap test' to ensure it was on when it should be at that point). The night before I was due to courier it back I discovered that the bridge pickup when selected on its own was producing a weak, scratchy tone. It's always somewhat demoralising when something like this happens - especially when checking / removing the pickup on a semi-acoustic is pretty challenging to start with. I have to say, I felt that the manufacturer's start point was to assume that I'd made a mistake. This irked me somewhat especially after I'd spent a couple of hours checking, re-wiring and re-checking everything. Well, to cut a long story short I sent the pickup back - and it did indeed turn out to be that '1 in a million' fault with the pickup - which to their credit, HOT promptly replaced. Off-camera I fitted the new pickup and of course, it worked perfectly. The lesson I learned from this - yet again - was to trust my ears and the work I'd already done. But because pickup tone is quite subjective it's hard to be certain that 'it doesn't sound right' - even though it certainly didn't! This is not the first time I've found fault in a product where the maker has told me that it's nearly impossible for it to be faulty... only for it to turn out to be faulty after all.
