Upon arriving on the route from the airport to Cayenne, the tropics/equator markers grabbed me. What a pleasure to find engaging smiles, a cool attitude, humid heat, lush vegetation,...
To illustrate this, I quote Bénédicte, an Ivorian who lives in Guyana who exclaimed next to me, “But it’s exactly like in my village here! ". It was during a visit to a village near the Maroni River, I had exactly the same thought at the same time, the discussions that followed were fascinating.
You will note that Cayenne and Abidjan are at the same latitude (within 48 kms). You will notice the omnipresence of two dominants. The first is made of forests, rivers and rivers. The second carries the incredible diversity of the population.
The great originality of Guyana, compared to the Ivory Coast where I worked two and a half, is that it is a French department. And this French department benefits from our social contract with France: health, education, assistance, justice, security, etc. It is a hybrid territory where ethnic diversity, the level of interbreeding are beyond measure and, it seems in good harmony.
I invite you to discover.
Marc
