"Super" Ashraf Bava, the founder of Super Studio Malappuram and the go-to person for everything related to 7s football, tells his story in the first episode of Kalpanthu's 7s series. He has dedicated his life to the beautiful game and also maintains a mini-museum at his home which is arguably the best source of information on football in Malabar.
7s is a 15-part docu-series produced by Kalpanthu. It explores multiple facets of Sevens football (especially in the district of Malappuram in Kerala). The 7-a-side version of football is immensely popular in the region and often sees even Indian national team players competing.
Why is 7s football so attractive? How did this format originate? How do they raise the money to host such large-scale tournaments? How is the game different from the 11s version?
We will be premiering 1 video per day at 7pm from May 1 to May 15. The month also marks the 3rd anniversary of Kalpanthu and the first for our journalism newsletter Vuvuzela.
How can you support us?
Film-making is expensive and at Kalpanthu we take pride in high-quality production. This quality can only be assured with time, expertise and research - all of which cost money. For example, the estimated cost of the entire 7s football series (15 videos) is close to Rs 1 lakh. You can help us continue making films by subscribing to our paid newsletter.
Vuvuzela isn't just a support scheme, however. It is an extension of Kalpanthu's core value - to bring out unknown/unheard stories of Indian football. The fortnightly newsletter employs some of the best journalists in the country and empowers them to tell stories that matter.
