Amazingly, hag fish can swim down into the brine lakes for a few several seconds at a time & do it multiple times b/c their stress response is to release mucus proteins that clog up the gills of fish that try to attack them. How does that help? Well, they naturally have to clean out their own gills also & they can do this by effectively tying themselves into a knot & running the knot along their entire body to slough off the mucus. Again, how does that help? Well, if their gills are clogged with stress mucus, they are not getting the toxic levels of salt into their bloodstream. In Blue Planet, 1 deep sea eel experienced toxic shock & barely survived, but since hag fish can effectively turn off their gills with stress mucus anytime they want, they basically don't get the toxic shock.
