I met Fr. Pine on the underground in Berlin 2 weeks ago. It felt so surreal to walk up to the train in a sketchy area of the city and find Fr. Pine casually standing in there. It totally made my whole week to have a quick chat with him. So cool! Oh yeah also thank you for being nice but you can say that Berlin is such a s***-hole lol.

Thank you Fathers. Excellent discussion. Might it be helpful if we (as a culture/community) could learn to separate the person from the behaviour? We can (and should) judge behaviours as wrong, bad, shameful, sinful, etc. But never throw out the person who committed those things. The person can learn to choose differently. The path to doing that is to acknowledge and recognize shameful behaviour. If it used to batter our person or others (as Jacob Bertrand says "self-flagellating reality") then we're simply self-indulgent (some even use this as a way to garner attention and not actually regret anything). We do each other a great disservice by not holding each other accountable for our bad behaviour all while loving the person into better choices.

Nice example of Harry Potter. I always thought it was very Christian-structured and was surprised when my children’s Catholic school didn’t allow it to be read in English class (they read “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” instead, ha ha ha). To me, Harry Potter is in the tradition of the whole British “middle earth lord of the rings” type fantasy literature based in Christian concepts. Personally, it’s not my cup of tea, but my youngest son loved reading Harry Potter at home and I was happy he loved it, and of course I’d point out all the Christian allusions. So, nice example Fr Gregory! I know you’ve used examples of Tolkien in the past, and, all witches aside, I do wish Catholic schools would allow Harry Potter. ❤️
