I had a wonderful conversation with a young reader, my son Beckett. He has been reading books that I would classify as visual heavy and text light. I encourage all types of texts and find graphic novels and graphic texts as a wonderful way to introduce young people to reading. In our BookMob discussion Beckett explains why he enjoys reading heavy visual texts and that he has decided that he is ready to read text heavy books. It is fun to have a one on one discussion with a young person caught up in the battle of the devices. TikTok, KZitem, internet and gaming has in the last derider demanded time and effort from young people to engage. Where does this leave reading? Still, much of the device information requires an attention to text in order to fully engage. Books have historically allowed children and young people to find adventure, excitement and entertainment through words. Suddenly the first two decades of the 21st century have offered young people and kids a plethora of visual stimulation, entertainment and education through gaming, TikTok and KZitem one would think that books have been left in the dust. I don’t think so. Books offer a distinct positive experience which recognises the challenges from contemporary visual medias and narrative, story and text based entertainment and education has a powerful and influential place in the digital world. There is no doubt that the book is up against a wave of digital influence but I would like to offer that books as a tool of growth continues to be a revenant source of growth and experience. Reading works parts of the brain that promotes cognitive wellness and goodness that the digital media doesn’t. It is a partnership that requires time share and your child will benefit in the most positive manner if they have space and mind time for reading.
