Really useful video. Thanks for documenting so well. And good job on saving the motor!

That donut or rubber exhaust gasket should be accessed by pulling the lower unit. Like replacing a water pump...

Did the motor also leak water from the hole in the tailpiece underneath the cowling?

What were the symptoms? I have a 40 hp Yamaha and at idle it would abruptly cut out. I pulled the powerhead and it looks just like yours. That exhaust gasket was deteriorated and I believe due to the exhaust gas reversion water was being pulled in to the combustion chamber. Your thoughts?

Mine had noticeable smoke coming out of the lower part of the block, where it meets the transom bracket. It would die at idol speed, shifting into forward or reverse. Once past idol speed it ran fine. This repair did solve the smoke issues and the motor runs strong now. I also slightly raised the idol and cleaned the carburetor with Sea Foam. There is a screw at the bottom of each carburetor, on the cup at the bottom of the carb. Take out those screws and it will expose the pin. Spray that with the sea foam. I’m not a mechanic, but it worked for me. Hope this is helpful.

Hi Mark, thanks for watching. My knowledge is limited to this one repair with this one motor. I do have a few things to share that might be helpful. I purchased all my parts online from Crowley Marine. Although their shipping has been delayed do to Covid, I found them to be a very good source for Yamaha parts. Good pricing and nice parts diagrams. The other thing I would recommend is replacing the barring seals and impeller at the same time. They will both be accessible and less then $20 in parts. I’ve been told it is important to clean all of the old gasket debris before installing the new ones. Lastly, I found there is some controversy on using a gasket sealer/grease when installing the gaskets. I was told that it is not needed for the new gaskets and in some cases can be bad for the gasket. Hope this is helpful. Again, not a mechanic, just try to save money and do things myself. This particular motor was pulled out of the dumpster and worth trying with little risk. It ran great all summer!
