GREAT TALK, DUSTIN! THANK YOU... At 55, I told my three high school/college aged sons that if I was starting over, I'd learn a trade rather than go to college (which was lotsa FUN, but a waste of time and money). I then turned to my girlfriend and said, "Why don't I take my own advice? Electricians don't stop being electricians when they turn 55, right?" She found me a 6 month hands on course at a nearby Trade School which got me going as an ET. Five years later, I passed the Journeyman's Exam. Yes, it's definitely hard work. Cold/hot weather; early start times, gotta show up EVERY DAY, but the rewards come if you put in the time and effort! I love working with my head and hands, so electrical is a good place for me. Almost 64 now, and I'll probably get my contractor's license by the end of 2023, start a company and plan to go until 70...

I retired at 55 four years ago after being in the trade for 33 years. There are guys who do work into their 60’s but it’s a tough gig. For me I have arthritis in both thumbs and my lower back is pretty temperamental. It’s a great trade but it’s very physical unless you are in management. You are also dealing with all of the elements whether it’s extreme heat, cold, wind or any weather condition. I really loved this video as it is very encouraging and he was very honest. Good luck to all of you whether you’re in the trade now or thinking of getting in. I made a good living for my family and I’m now enjoying a great retirement. I work at a high school now because, like he said, you’re never too old as long as you’re breathing!! God bless.

Start your own business. I'd hate to say it, but everything is becoming more and more corporatised and as such, they have an idiot HR dept which is full of idiots and don't realise that experience and knowledge of both the job and willingness to learn skills in management, which is a huge bonus to being a part of MGMT in the first place. What boggles my mind is that people in HR believe that an MBA is more valuable than someone with years of experience as a foreman. The only way around this is IF the company is a small corporation or if you waste your time going to school which means lost income and tacked-on debt. @@TheCoffeeNut711

It's up to you skip. The trades do have LLPs (limited-liability partnerships) or LLCs (limited-liability corporations/companies), but the are smaller in number and due to the tax incentive, which i personally fell they should get rid of, more people starting their business in the trades establish their businesses as incorporated to ease their liability. Don't lose hope though, plenty have done it, it's just a matter of being smart about things. Businesses usually run themselves and won't fuck themselves over unless you, the owner, do two things, over micromanage and treat your employees like garbage and don't incetivise them. Its up to you though. Not sure if you're Americans, but I suggest moving down south or mid-west but past michigan/illinois, there are better tax incentives for people to start their own businesses and there's a major need for people to get in there. You can only establish a business if you have a master's license, so keep that in mind. @@TheCoffeeNut711

I’m a 33 year old apprentice. I stopped my apprenticeship when I was 25 or so and chased the oilfield money. I did great out there for almost 5 years. Loved the work, the guys, the schedule, everything. But then around 2015 I got laid off when oil prices dropped out. Also started having kids around that time. So after bouncing around to a few jobs that kept the bills paid I finally found a job as an industrial electrician. I’m glad to because I remember I was getting bored with residential and commercial work when I left. So I’m glad I found the industrial side. It is kind of embarrassing to be a 33 YO apprentice but it’s just part of my journey and what I’ve got to get through to provide for my family while still being home to see them every night.

Then I look at my dad who is a 76 year old master who is on his jobs 6 days a week and I know the answer. In alot of ways the mental and psysical aspects keep you young in the trades. At least in my opinion. There is a guy that lived across the street from me growing up that had a roofing company. I saw one of his trucks last summer and figured one of the grand kids had taken over. I looked up and there was old Larry up on the roof every bit of 85 years old.

Man, I really needed this video. I'm 28 and have been in IT for the last 6 years or so and I'm just tired of sitting around a computer all day. Definitely looking into becoming an electrician. Keeps me around technology that I like, but significantly more mobile. Also pays a lot more after a few years.

I love the rant you went on about "common sense" around 3:30 or so, since I've dealt with so many people giving me hell about "not having common sense," and I basically say exactly what you said, about how what's "common" to some folks isn't so common to others. I'm glad you said that

good points and an excellent video overall ! The subject of this video is more objective to me since I have been a Commercial/Industrial electrician for 51 years and my apprenticeship was a long time ago. It was so long ago and just to put that in prospective, I remember walking into a building and seeing everyone clumped in a group around something. I thought it was a fight so I ran over only to be disappointed when I saw it was just a guy showing off his drill. I almost walked away but then I noticed...IT DIDN'T HAVE A CORD!!!!!!!!!... yeah, that long ago. I think the detriment to being older and coming into my trade is the emphases is all on being fast and quick and not being so concerned with craftsmanship. Nowadays workmanship is all but disappearing as more and more shortcuts are becoming the mainstay.

Love this shit but I live residential and commercial electrical work even more. Especially the service end of it. When I retire in 7 years, I want to do this stuff. I'm pumped even more now knowing it will be perfect for me even knocking on 40! Thanks for this video, really great work!

I’m 41 and applied for cert II in electro technology (pre-vocational) this month. I can’t wait to start and hopefully get accepted at a decent company as an adult apprentice by the end of my 10 week training here in Australia. My heart keeps pumping every time I think about it. Life is good 😊

Congrats and good luck, I’m 46 this year and I’ve sat on the fence this last year on doing the cert II after trying to enrol with Qld tafe (who are hopeless) as I didn’t want to spend the money to maybe not get a job, but after recently talking to a mate who’s just started his own company, he’s really encouraged me to go for it and told me that his other colleagues are screaming out for mature age apprentices as we don’t have to be supervised all of the time. Just about to enrol in Tafe NSW. Once again good luck.

Hi Dustin! Before I start I wanna say that I'm a huge fan of your channel! I love watching your videos and I absolutely 100% could not agree more with your message that there's no such thing as being "too old" to try something new or to learn a new skill! .. But being completely honest, I still can't stop myself finding it strange that you only started in the trade when you were 22/23! And whats even stranger for me is that 22/23, or even older, is the normal age for starting an apprenticeship in a lot of countries! .. I live in Ireland and was fully qualified by the time I was 22 after serving my 4 years of hell and at that point was instructing and managing my own apprentices that had been assigned to me .. a lot of whom were actually older than I was! Which didn't always work out because they didn't like having to take direction from a younger guy who knew more about certain things than they did, as I'm sure you can imagine! 🤣 personally, I think being an apprentice is more about your attitude than your age .. you may be a fully grown man with lots of life or work experience but in the trade and as an apprentice you are still very much considered a "boy" and effectively useless until you reach a certain point in your development and this is very difficult for the majority of older people to accept! .. Not saying that I would ever be an asshole to apprentices or that I would ever ask someone to do something that I wouldn't do myself, because I wouldn't, or that I think that sort of attitude towards apprentices is ok, because I don't think it is! But certain guys will disagree with what I'm saying here and work with the "fuck him/ her they're only an apprentice" attitude .. but being honest, as unfortunate as it is in some ways, it kinda comes with the territory and if you don't accept that at the outset you will be in for a shock! Pardon the pun 😜 .. the whole taking orders/ direction thing doesn't sit well with a lot of older people who are slower, more reluctant to work hard and try to impress and who are more set in their ways! This is why employers tend to favor younger candidates for apprenticeships! They can mold them into the perfect tradesmen! .. Being completely honest, when I started in the trade at 18, despite feeling in my own head like I was a grown man and I knew everything and I wouldn't let myself be talked down to by some "old guys" who thought they were better than me, I quickly realised how much they could offer me and how much I could learn from them if I behaved the right way! And also how difficult they could make my day to day life become if I didn't! And looking back I now see my younger self how they would have seen me and the simple fact is, that despite how I felt in my own head, at that point in my life I was still in fact very much a boy that was suddenly thrown into a mans world! 😮 I had to make cups of tea for the qualified guys everyday! And that might sound ridiculous to some people reading this but it's amazing how doing little things like that makes guys wanna open up and show you more things and help you and just generally teach you more and take an interest in you! I had to go to the shops and get shit for them whenever they wanted stuff! I had to run back and forth across the sites and up and down ladders getting tools and parts and pull cables for them! I got shouted at constantly and even roughed up at times for being cheeky! .. I experienced HELL! And it was almost too much at times .. But at the same time, looking back, it really didn't do me any harm and I can see now that it actually thought me a great deal about life in general and respect for your elders/ superiors! And anytime I got shouted at or hit was because I had fucked something up and endangered someone or slacked off and I can assure you I never made those mistakes twice!! 🤣 And the main reason anyone ever gave out to me about it was actually because what I saw as being these "grumpy old tradesmen who prided themselves on making my life hell", actually cared about my training and wanted to see me become the best possible Electrician I could be! All of which, I now find myself feeling grateful for! .. And that's kinda what I'm getting at here, that idea of bowing to experience may sound old fashioned but undertaking an apprenticeship is an ancient style of learning and passing on skills and that mentality that you are the "boy" isn't meant to disrespect people, it is meant as a way to instill certain qualities into the apprentice/ future qualified tradesman that a lot of people who have never experienced it will never understand properly! There's something very special about completing your apprenticeship and the moment you go from being the bottom of the stack or "the shit on my boot" (as during my apprenticeship I was once told by a particularly charming qualified electrician) to a fully fledged tradesman yourself is an INDESCRIBABLE feeling! And immensely rewarding! But unless you've been through it, you will never understand it! So, to wrap all this up, if you're considering becoming an electrician, GO FOR IT! I cannot recommend it enough! I love my job every single day I get to do it! In some ways we are like gods walking among mere mortals harnessing this amazing energy that can do incredible things! .. or end your life at any second! 🤣 and if that scares you, try becoming an apprentice Plumber, Bricklayer or Carpenter instead! 😉 either way this advice would apply to those too! 😛 bottom line, if you wanna be an apprentice, you have to be able to swallow every bit of pride or ego you may have and just accept that in this world at the start, as a first year apprentice, you're as low as it gets! Regardless of age, sex, nationality, height, build, race, creed .. WHATEVER! You're here to help these qualified guys get their job done and get home to their family safely and soak up everything you can from them in the meantime along with every bit of knowledge and tricks they can offer you and just accept that it will all be worth it in the long run! If you're serious about it, stick with it, suck up the criticism! You'll be amazed how fast 4 years will fly by! Being able to just grin and take shit without loosing your cool is a big part of this trade! After all would you trust your life in the hands of someone who can't handle a little pressure and is about to flip out at any moment? Because I for one, sure as fuck wouldn't! Best of luck guys! It won't be easy, but it'll definitely be worth it! Chris
