Yes, it's amazing how the best author of popular Roman history (alongside Mary Beard) doesn't have a million subscribers.

Please don't take this post the wrong way, as I TRULY appreciate you taking the time to make them, and enjoy hearing your take on each episode. However, I will say we have very different tastes when it comes to pacing and what makes an enjoyable watching experience. There isn't a single episode of Rome that I would categorize as "slow" or "meandering" to me. I even enjoy season 2 for all its faults. Are some episodes better than others? Of course, but from the time the music starts and that Roman Graffiti starts coming to life, till the end credits roll, I'm fully encapsulated in the world the show is creating. Every character has something of weight and interest for me to get wrapped up in, from the high class nobles, to the street level citizens. Just this episode alone, I LOVE the conversations and interactions between the young Octavian and Pullo, and one of my favorite scenes from the entire show is when Pompey is on the beach trying to decide what to do, while he tells the slave who's kneeling at his feet how easy his life must be. Such a minor moment that says so much in a clever way. Subtle story telling that a show like "Those About To Die" couldn't replicate even if they tried. No, it's not perfect, nothing ever will be, but it's the biggest budget production we're likely to see in our lifetimes that at least put forth this much effort to try and give some 'small sense' of what Ancient Rome may have felt like, instead of just feeding every Hollywood stereotype that's already firmly ensconced in the public conscious, like the aforementioned "Those About to Die", and others of that ilk. Again, not trying to come off as antagonistic, as I'm humbled and grateful you're even taking the time to make these, I'm just giving a 'minor' rebuttal to some of the narrative issues you've given with the show. I'm also really looking forward to the 100th video with viewer questions coming soon!

Thank you for doing this, love your channel. Can I suggest more discussion of the actual history and less of the drawn out film criticism?

One thing that's always been strange and you didn't touch on it but as soon as you mentioned Varenus as a Primus Pilus I thought of it again. Why he and his family are portrayed as plebs. They come off as poor and barely surviving. Very strange I guess they never wanted to show any sort of difference between a noble and everyone else.

They were plebs obviously, and when Vorenus left Rome prior to the war in Gaul he was likely a young soldier, not Primus Pilus, without much money. The wealth he had acquired in the war in Gaul was largely lost.

You encouraged me to rewatch season 1. I cannot rewatch season 2. I really appreciate Augustus (smarmy little know it all) now that I understand the history and Mark Antony was solid expect at times a bit too smart.

Season 1 is one of my favorite season of television ever produced. Season two is almost entirely forgettable. It’s a tragedy what this show could have been.

@@teddyjackson1902 Yeah, the show was probably 5 years too early for its own good. That was the same era when HBO effectively cancelled The Sopranos simply because they didn't want to go into contract negotiations with the cast after season 6, as well as straight up cancelling Deadwood because of costs like Rome. Had it been the 2010s and into the Netflix and streaming era where they'd have a better idea of how to monetize it then it probably would have gotten 5-6 seasons. What amazes me is how the executives couldn't see the writing on the wall in like 2006 that the system was about to inexorably change and distribution and thus monetization was going to become broader as well as longer lasting.

@@gf4670 I agree and I’ve read they regretted what they did within months of doing it when it became obvious that streaming content had value. As I understood it the set actually caught fire and burned which played a role in them being unable or unwilling to perform a u-turn. Looking back I would have loved to have had three or four seasons of Caesar in Gaul. Hinds was perfectly cast. He is Caesar in my mind.

I am not sure what that has to do with this episode, but I would point you to the "Unauthorised History of The Pacific War" podcast. A crayon-eater should like it.
