I noticed something re(-re-re-re-etc)-watching it: the first time we hear Gendo is when Shinji calls him on the phone. We stay on Shinji’s POV so Gendo is a terrifying mysterious figure who Shinji is terrified to address. We have no idea what Gendo is doing, he is probably plotting some nefarious plot. When the POV switch to Gendo, we learn he was clearly doing absolutely nothing just chilling, because this was such the slowest day ever that half the staff were getting their laundry. And afterwards we get one of the very rare comedy scenes with Gendo where he is trying (and failing) to stay cool by soaking his feet. NGE uses a comedy episode to show us between the image Gendo is projecting to the world and to Shinji (a mysterious mastermind) and what he actually is (a pathetic who’s trying to destroy the world because the only girl who ever liked him was fused with a robot)

It also contains more than a few references to space opera anime, such as Space Battleship Yamato and the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Some of my favorite parts were the Gekiganger 3 sequences, which were a tribute to Go Nagai's Getter Robo series (and much of the super robot genre from the seventies).

@@Mr.Needle-Hamster it's certainly subjective, I would say I think it's SUPPOSED to make you uncomfortable for sure. Like Anno said himself, the parts he hates the most are the parts where he sees himself, but those parts that reflect his state of mind and his struggles are the soul of Eva; self reflection and discomfort are integral parts of the experience. As well, those psychological themes resonate more if you can relate to the problems the characters have, I don't know you and I don't know if you do or don't relate, but for me a lot of it really hit home, particularly the whole "hedgehog's dilemma" is very prevalent in my life, and Shinji's choice to keep everyone separate, to accept the pain of living along with the joy, is an uplifting message.
