Hey man. great video. To be a better comparison i would say have the same projectors on the same plane or elevation. Angle of incidence is a factor when dealing with an A/B comparison. I love my epson and I plan on buying the 5050. Inherently, DLP will have a more color saturation. 3 chip LCD shines in every other aspect of projector performance. I did something similar with optoma and epson. BenQ does an amazing job at bringing 4K HDR to the public at a lower cost than the competitors. if people are budget conscious the benQ is a great choice. Great video. You nailed all the key points. I dont think i could have done it better.

I have the TW9300 (5040UB), and in my opinion there is no way you can accurately compare the HDR image if using the Epson in Natural mode. The filter needs to be engaged, using either Cinema or Digital Cinema modes - especially as it was stated that the BenQ automatically adjusts its mode. If the HDR image was found to be almost comparable in this review, it leads me to think the Epson would have surpassed the BenQ if used correctly. Also, the filter is the only way to achieve rec BT.2020 (for HDR), where this Epson rates at 100% accuracy. So all of the comments about over-saturation of colour would have been void if only the filter was used. I know I'm sounding over-critical here, but in actual fact I appreciate the review.

Just picked up a 5050ub 🤣 I actually went with it because my sources are mostly not going to be in hdr or 4k. I use my projector in my living room for daily sports streaming from roku which is usually 720p on roku apps (I know gasp) the 5050ub is amazing at rendering lower quality stuff. Of course, if I had an htpc with full 4k content and a cable box pushing 4k regularly I would probably go with the BenQ. I'll probably upgrade in 2-3 years so we'll see what around $3k then! Remember folks it's easy to get caught up in specs, but it really comes down to the quality of the source! You only need to press 2 buttons and you've got HDR mode... certainly shouldn't be a deal breaker.. The first level HDR setting is the best one imho. 5 жыл бұрын
@@ScottsTechandStuff I'd never do a comparison on the PQ just out the box. It's amazing how much better that you can improve the picture quality on all projectors with some tinkering (if you know what you're doing). As I said, when you start to push the limits of any projector with too much of the wizardry turned on then it can be at the expense of other aspects of the PQ. You may indeed find that when you start to try and push the brightness up and increase color depth on the BenQ that it begins to affect skin tones and dark levels etc. It's a fair point I'm raising. Both PJs are indeed excellent, but the extra bucks may be better spent on the Epson, which is the better PJ IMO. However, Round 2 would be interesting if you care to spend the time with a Color Meter to get the best out of each PJ.

Why would the Epson not be put in digital cinema for an HDR comparison?
@ScottsTechandStuff
5 жыл бұрын
I mostly stuck to out of the box settings without any filters on. Most of the people I speak to prefer the images without the filters that 'Digital Cinema' places over both. I figured that is the way that most people would compare. In hindsight it would have been easy to quickly put both projectors into their filter modes. Oh well. I will be more thoroughly reviewing the 5050UB in the coming weeks and months so I will definitely speak to that. I have a calibrated mode with the filter on the Epson. The hit on darkness is too much for my liking, however it does produce an exceptional image!! The image quality on both of these projectors are so good. If you have a smaller screen around 100" You can make really good use of the filters on each.

Great video. I wish you would have used the bright cinema mode on the epson because there natural is saturated. I had the 5040ub loved the quality when it worked but I had many replacements due to multiple issues. Green dots on black scenes and flickering on bright scenes. These issues tend to come after about 500-1000hrs. Techs also say not to use the auto iris as it causes issues.

Hi. My screen is 92inch size. Do you thing that there will be a sharpness difference between the two projectors? Or will be not visible so much at this size?

Ok so my closest seat is 8 feet away from projector screen. Is the screen door effect visible from this distance?

Great video, Thanks for making! I have a Epson HC8350 and I am going to upgrade. When you change settings on your 5050UB for a viewing session. Do you change the settings in the middle of a movie / game? Or do you only change setting switching to a different movie / game? I like dark blacks but do not like crushed blacks. When I have viewed other Epson UB projectors in person, lost shadow detail for lots of inky black in a scene always bugged me. On your 5050UB can you tweek the settings ?gama? to get better shadow detail? I am OK with losing a little deep black for better shadow. Thanks! 🙂

At 10:06 image it looks like some one has put green color in water in epson image. Benq looks very natural.

Are the blacks on the epson that much better over the benq? Would it be worth the money?
@ScottsTechandStuff

Yes they are quite a bit better. the BenQ's are actually pretty good for a DLP but you will most all of the time get better blacks on a 3LCD projector. There are tradeoffs for both technologies.

Whether its worth the money. Some will say yes.... some will prefer the benefits of sharpness, motion fluidiity, and color ofthe DLP

Thanks for this review I've owned JVC projectors for the past few years because of their great black levels...how would you rate the black levels on the Epson compared to a JVC projector in the same price range ?

is the BenQ HT5550 bright enough to support a screen size of 144"+? I'm debating between that or the BenQ TK850 - if I can save the money and the extra lumens are worth it then I'll go with the TK850, but I really have no idea.

Scott could you please advise me on what projector to get (1st ever) I obviously don’t want to spend a couple of thousand being my 1st ever one. I wanted to set one up in my bedroom 3m from the wall hanging on the ceiling is my thoughts. Looking for a good native 1080P with good contrast. Could you name a couple for me please ?? And thank you!!

Great review, thanks for the analysis. I'm really leaning towards the Epson because of the input lag for gaming. Because of space, I will too be sitting approximately 12 ft from the screen. I'm debating between a 150 inch screen or 135. How visible are the pixels? Which size would you recommend with this projector, I too want the immersive experience. Thanks again!

Any issues with the motion handling? Noticable juddering/studdering in scenes on either?
@ScottsTechandStuff

The DLP chip of the BenQ handles motion a bit better, but I don't think anyone will complain about the way Epson handles motion. Both are very good. The BenQ is also natively handling 24hz content. No 3:2 pulldown so it is very smooth.

Man this is tough. I’ll probably use it about evenly split between movies/sports/gaming. My gut says get the Epson but $500 and more sharpness are hard to pass up. I also like things simple and the epson picture settings seem like a pain.

They are both missing 1 small thing to push me off the fence. 5550 its cec and 5050ub its auto setting preferences. I really wish the 5550 had cec. It wouldn't even be a question for me then. Better input lag would be nice but I don't think I really need it.
