So first of all, Ian doesn't mix his own releases, he has gone on record and said he doesn't feel comfortable doing final mix passes for commercial releases. I'd recommend looking at Josh Gudwin's videos, who actually mixes quite a few of Ian's major releases. Having said that, this example is pretty iffy. A low cut is helpful, but he's doing a very conservative low cut while also giving that enormous bump at 1k with a very wide bell curve. He's not really cutting a lot of unnecessary sub information - you can see it in the spectrum analyzer. And because that bell curve is SO wide, it's actually re-boosting a lot of the sub-100hz information. Consequently he's actually not getting rid as much of the unnecessary information that he's talking about, and sure you can compensate for the huge boost by reducing the volume, but that won't fix potential gain staging issues. The high end of that bell curve boost could also be further boosting harsh frequencies. A few different ideas would be: 1) cut steeper than Ian is here until it feels right (be aware some instruments like Pianos sometimes lose their body if you cut too hard). 2) If the goal is less emphasis on high end information, just reduce that info with a shelf or bell instead of a huge midrange boost like Ian is doing here. 3) You can also notch out sharp frequencies using Pro-Q's dynamic setting or oeksound's Soothe so that those harsh frequencies aren't always being notched out 100% of the time, just when they're particularly harsh and unappealing. Use your ears when it comes to harsh frequencies, do this *if* something is bothering you.
