In 2005 hospitals still used pagers a lot and that's when the show kinda came out. Also House did clinic duty, usually when they were short on doctors... which happened a little more often than normal (pre-rona). That said a lot of wacky stuff happened in this series

House md was a great show, still one of my favorites. Heavily inspired by Sherlock Holmes. Also all the things you questioned are explained in the show. Fun fact - the show actually saved some lives, you can look it up. He's a genius diagnostician with his own specialized team that focuses on rare cases no one else can diagnose. He's forced to work the clinic for all the ridiculous things he does to get his diagnosis on those cases. In other words he deals with zebras exclusively. But he is knowledgeable in almost all medicine (and countless other things) due to the fact that his father was stationed all over the world in the military and all he had to do was read for fun.

When it comes to the whole nephrologist and infectious disease guy doing an opthmology exam and knowing what to do? He's a diagnostician first and foremost. So he'd probably know how to do routine exams for other areas of the body, like a GP would.
@MartinBarker

ok, I think you need context, in the show the hospital runs a Free Clinic the way they do it is by forcing all doctors who can GP on staff to have rotation/number of hours per year in the Clinic while he has those specialists he also has a General Practitioner knowledge enough to be working in the clinic and is forced to be there as a General Dr not as his specialist.

He’s working clinic duty in most of these clips, but he runs the Diagnostic Medicine dept and solves hard cases. He has a team of fellows with other specialties. It’s meant to be like Sherlock but medicine. Not super realistic (especially how his doctors do everything themselves) but it’s funny and entertaining.
@kjp2006

ok, to add some context to a couple of things that he questioned so hopefully this clears things up. The eye exam is something he does daily in his special cases as he does an inhuman amount of assessments and basically is within his scope in the magical world of Princeton Plainsboro Hospital. paging him for the code blue: he's head of a specialized team who is a specialized in this experience and he also goes to observe any possible changes while the team is working on the patient, which on the show, can lead him to a new prognosis

Regarding your comment at 5:30 about having family members translate, Law and Order did an episode in 2003 involving a family member who mistranslated for her sister. This was the 13th season's "House Calls". The direction "Take the painkiller no less than 24 hours after this other medication" became "Take the painkiller no less than 2-to-4 hours after this other medication".

Thanks for the real world insight! just an fyi for the show, while House does have those specialties, but the way he's employed at the fictional hospital in the show is as "head diagnostician" which is obviously a fiction positional, but he runs the "diagnostics department" which means he does general care in a lot of episodes, as well as clinic duty, which is where all these clips come from. Basically, I'm just saying that the way he treat patients makes sense in the plot of the show but obviously is fictional to how it works in real life.
@PerthTowne

This isn't a good video of House to react to, because these are scenes from when he is forced to work in the clinic. That's not his normal practice. The premise of this show is that House is kind of the doctor of last resort, when other doctors can't diagnose what's wrong with someone because they are suffering from something extremely rare of some bizarre combination of symptoms, the patient goes to House and his team. His specialty is examining the clues and solving the mystery, like a Sherlock Holmes, which is the parallel the creators of the show used. In order to really react to House, you need to watch an actual episode of House. Try something from the first or second season, like "All In," "DNR," or "Occam's Razor." I don't know how medically accurate the show was, but the writing and the acting were top notch, and I really enjoyed the show, and Hugh Laurie's performance as Gregory House. He is also one of those Brits who does a flawless American accent. People who watched House for years had no idea that he was British.
@mr.e1026

So we're clear about the idea behind Dr. House, he works in a hospital where part of his job is in a clinic. Clinic duty requires a doctor. Doesn't matter what their specialty is. Dr. Wilson is an oncologist. He does clinic work, also. In fact, so does Foreman, Chase and Cameron. Chase actually did some work in a rotation in NICU. When a girl goes to the clinic for shortness of breath or severe headaches following an auto collision, she is not going to see House because he specializes in any of that. But, the fact of the matter is he figures out cases no one else does.

Edit sorry for getting rude at the end it’s just this is a wonderful show that inspires many people to pursue medical careers. Dude, you should actually watch the whole show or at least get some more information before making fun of the story. Most things you bring up are explained, for example, why he is doing normal examinations. For me as a foreigner who knows at least a little bit about Dr.House, you come up very ignorant in this video. Your amercian news shows are called "opinion shows" so it makes no sense to ridicule a fictional medical show for being "not so realistic". Life is not a TV show.

So, House has to do clinic hours because Dr. Cuddy (the dean of medicine and the boss of the hospital) tells him to do so many clinic hours in a week. He doesn't enjoy it, obviously. He takes very rare and extreme cases and works with a team to come up with a diagnosis for patients that are about to die. He is supposed to be the best of the best in NJ, and in America. He was in an accident and they wanted to amputate his leg, but he didn't want that to happen. He is addicted to Vicodin. He is also a narcissistic sociopath.
