Absolutely. One of my lifetime concert highlights was the second or third time I saw Erasure live, at some point during a keyboard vamp section (I think during Blue Savannah?) the audience started chanting "VINCE! VINCE! VINCE!" and he cracked a huge smile despite otherwise remaining stoic the entire show as usual. Adorable and hilarious.

I saw Erasure open for Bowie in 87 (or there about) and Andy Bell was just amazing. The crowd was restless and some objects were thrown at the band. Andy was hit on the hip by a tub of yoghurt. He kept his composure and pushed through the song like a true professional. Then, when an apple was hurled at Andy, he sidestepped what was going the be a certain hit to his face, caught the apple, took a bite out of it and with a limp wrist tossed it back at the audience with a “merci beaucoup”. The crowd let out an all mighty cheer and he won everybody’s heart. Thank you Andy for this beautiful memory

I met Andy while he was on tour with Cyndi Lauper in Oklahoma. It was an outside event. He went backstage and sat on a brick wall. I yelled his name and he came to me. We spoke for 45 minutes. For one thing they've been fortunate enough to have been signed with Mute Records from the start. Daniel Miller is one of the good guys. I should also point out that Vince was smart enough to sign with and stick with a mom & pop label like Mute when Depeche Mode, his band at the time, were starting to get offers from the majors.
@braindrain8922

Because they drift in and out of the industry , and have always been happy not to push the " I'm A list darling"
@rbrtck
4 жыл бұрын
@@braindrain8922 True, in the public eye, although they did drive a hard bargain when it came to record deals, as in maintaining control over what they did and only agreeing to short-term commitments. With Mute it was always completely at-will on both sides with expenses and profits shared 50-50, and Erasure always tried to stay as close to that as they could with other regional labels, taking their own risks and owing and being owed very little. If either side wanted to walk away, they could, pretty much, and sometimes they did. Vince and Daniel (Mute) have never walked away from each other, though, and I think Mute are handling Erasure worldwide now. This limits Erasure's reach and potential somewhat, but they trust Daniel. The usual record deals that even huge global stars sign involve tons of money up front, but that is really a loan, and it will get paid back, with the artist pretty much selling their souls--locked up exclusively for 10+ albums with the labels calling all of the shots. Vince had turned down several such deals from major labels when Depeche Mode were getting started, despite the big money being waved under their noses. Daniel only offered a handshake (no written contract and no money up front) and a personal promise to do right by the band with his limited resources, or else they could take off anytime they wanted to. Vince and his bands have stuck with Daniel and Mute ever since, and have never (to my knowledge) signed a typical kind of deal with others (always much more limited).

Andy Bell is too modest, his voice has always been superb and just right for Erasure. A really happy accident these two got together to make music. I'm so glad they've 'kept the band together' too. And they sound like down-to-earth lovely people too: none of this rock star attitude, despite the fact that their hits are 30 years old. Now their original Gen-X and Gen-Y fans are older and have a bit of money it's great that these guys can still ride the music beast to make what I expect is a very good living!

I have nothing but the most fondest memories of my childhood when i was introduced to Erasure. Early morning on a weekend. Me playing in my kids room around 1988/89 or so, colouring a colourbook and having my mom's old suitcase radio playing some station and suddenly an Erasure song came on and it instantly grabbed my attention and Andy Bell's voice warmed my heart and put a smile on my face. That followed by seeing some Erasure music videos on TV. In particular "Blue Savannah" and i knew i was in love with this band and their music. And that hasn't changed a single bit till today :) Erasure has followed me through life for 31 years now like a good friend and just wish i could personally show Vince & Andy my gratitude personally.
