Ereğli is a very old city with historical roots dating back to 2000 BC. It is a cradle of civilization. Historical data show that the district has hosted many Anatolian Civilizations from the Hittites to the Turkish domination, thus forming a mosaic of civilizations. Ereğli owes this feature to having one of the two main natural harbors in the Western Black Sea Region. However, historical data shows that coastal trade is insufficient to reach Ereğli's level of development it deserves. The reason for this is that although Ereğli is productive as a port city, its inability to achieve a significant commercial activity and its lack of contact with the interior.
Ereğli was developed by the hard coal mine, which was put into operation in 1848, and the Ereğli Iron and Steel Factory, which was put into operation in 1965.
