This portion, “Bechukotai,” meaning "in My statutes," concludes the book of Leviticus with a review of the blessings for obedience and penalties for disobedience to the LORD and His covenant. In particular, Chapter 26 defines a series of increasing judgments against the children of Israel, leading to their expulsion from the land into the hands of their enemies; however, God promised that He will not reject us nor abhor us. The door for repentance remains open. Indeed, God states that He will remember His covenant with our fathers for us. He says He will do this because He is our God (and we are His people). This portion concludes with the rules on how to calculate the values of different types of pledges made to God, and the command of tithing produce and livestock.
