The unplanned industrial development stretching from Istanbul to Tekirdağ along the D-100 highway has been polluting the air, water, and soil of the Ergene Basin since the 1970s. The Ergene River, which became a topic of discussion following the deep discharge project after the mucilage outbreak in the Sea of Marmara, has turned into a waste channel where even microbes cannot survive, and rescue teams are unable to enter to retrieve those who fall into it. In the field studies we conducted in September and October 2021, locals and experts described the impact of this pollution on public health, the environment, and the region’s key source of livelihood, agriculture.
