Hi Berk. That's a beautiful monitor. If you want to use something other than the included stand, I believe that you can indeed use the HX Monitor arm with your monitor. I understand that the C49RG94SSU is 34.97 x 119.95 x 52.31 cm and is 14.6 Kilograms. The weight capacity for the Ergotron HX is 20-42 lbs. (9.1-19 kg) so your monitor is right in the middle, in the sweet spot. If you want to try a desk-attached monitor arm, the HX Desk Monitor Arm may serve you well. Happy New Year! Is the arm only for heavy monitors? What about very light monitors?
@SeanDillman
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Xiao. That's a good question. I should warn people about that in future reviews. Generally speaking, the HX series is for larger/heavier monitors and the LX series is for smaller/lighter ones. The weight capacity for the HX (the one I have and review in this video) is 20-42 lbs (9.1-19 kg). For the LX series, (part number 45-241-026), the weight capacity is 7-25 lbs (3.2-11.3 kg). It's definitely important to match the weight of the monitor to the arm because it needs a certain amount of weight to hold its position. If you happen to have a monitor that is below the minimum weight, it is possible to use longer bolts on the back and install some additional weight behind the monitor, but this is a bit of a fudge and certainly is not ideal in terms of fit and finish. The ideal situation is to make sure that the specifications of the arm and the monitor go together (size, weight, method of mounting to the wall or desk, etc.). I remember reading about this issue on a Geek Hack forum once and I think that I found the post. Here is a link if you’re interested: geekhack.org/index.php?topic=103310.0

You are most welcome @@xiaohan7804. It's a good thing that you checked ahead of time. Kudos. You certainly wouldn't want to have picked up a mounting arm only to find that it wasn't suitable. I once worked at an office where there was a LX arm. One thing I liked about it was how it has that pole which provides additional height off the top of the desk surface. The collar bracket attaches to the pole and that is where the arm attaches and the left/right swivel happens. In contrast, the HX has no pole and instead the arm attaches directly to the mount that is attached to the desk surface and that is where the left/right swivel happens. Of course it all depends on your desk setup and what you need but I have also used the LX and I liked it. At this point I've used about five different Ergotron products and I've always been impressed by the quality. There is also the option of adding weight to a monitor mount with one of the plates offered by Ergodirect (www.ergodirect.com/17300-add-weight-plate-with-vesa.html). However, it's certainly not ideal. It is also a bit pricey for a piece of metal with holes drilled through it. $50 or more with shipping. I was just reading another forum post and someone suggested the following as a solution: "Hardware store, sheet metal of suitable density, and a drill." This is a good DIY solution but it would be tricky to buy a piece or pieces of metal that has the right dimensions and then of course most of us don't just have a drill press sitting around. It's fun to consider the possibilities though. =)

Жыл бұрын
Hi Madrid. If you have another person to help you, I would recommend it so that you can be sure to not have either of your monitors fall or get damaged. Step 1 - Unplug the power cable and any cables that connect your monitor to your computer or other devices. Step 2 - Use a screwdriver or Allen key to loosen the tension knob that holds the monitor in place. Turn the knob counterclockwise to loosen it. Be careful to do this in a controlled way so as to not damage your monitor. Step 3 - Once the knob is loose, lift the monitor up and off the arm. Be careful not to drop the monitor. Step 4 - Place the new monitor onto the arm and align the VESA mount holes on the back of the monitor with the mounting plate on the arm. Step 5 - Once the holes are aligned, use the screws that came with the monitor arm to secure the monitor to the arm. Step 6 - Tighten the tension knob on the side of the arm to secure the monitor in place. Turn the knob clockwise until it is tight. Step 7 - Connect the power cable and any cables that connect your monitor to your computer or other devices. Step 8 - Adjust the arm to the desired position and enjoy your new monitor! If you have any trouble with these steps, you may want to refer to the user manual that came with your Ergotron HX Monitor Arm for additional guidance. Was that helpful? 🖥👍😊

Hi Judas. That's a good question. The short answer is, I think so. The long answer is more complicated. With respect to the mounting bracket, I'm looking at that monitor on the LG website: www.lg.com/us/support/product/lg-38WN95C-W.AUS. I am looking at pages 8. It shows a diagram of the back of the monitor and the mounting plate. The Ergotron HX Desk Monitor arm comes with the components to fit this mounting plate configuration. With respect to weight, I'm looking at page 28. It says that the monitor is 6.6 kg (14.5 lbs.) without the stand. I'm on the Ergotron website to confirm the specifications. It shows that it can handle a monitor from 9.1 to 19.1 kg (20 to 42 lbs.). The LG monitor you have is within this standard. The website also warns "For a display weighing 28-42 lbs. (12.7-19.1 kg) with a depth of 6"-12" (15-30 cm), the accessory HX Heavy-Duty Tilt Pivot (98-540-216) is required". I am again looking at the manual for the monitor and it appears to be within these specifications (so you should not need the HX Heavy-Duty Tilt Pivot accessory. To get some firsthand knowledge, I'm reading a review on Amazon by Ian from the UK, posted on December 1, 2020. It is called “Super stable Desk Monitor Arm for Ultrawide Monitor”. Ian says “I purchased this monitor arm following some reviews on KZitem as to its suitability for supporting ultrawide screen monitors. I work with an LG 49WL95C ultra wide monitor that comes in with a weight of approx 29Ibs (12.6Kg) alongside the big real estate desktop space that I need for my work.” There is also a review from Craig McRae (as from the UK). It is called "Jazzy with my Samsung C49RG90". I know this is not the same monitor as yours, but he includes many useful pictures and descriptions of his setup using his ultrawide monitor. Finally, if you really want to be sure, you could call Ergotron to ask someone. They are generally very helpful and knowledgeable people. I hope that was helpful. Thanks Judas.

How do I remove the monitor from the arm after mounted? It is difficult to lift it up and remove it (2 bottom screws are removed).
@SeanDillman
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric. Thank you for that question. There are a few ways to go about it which depend on the size of your monitor and how accessible it and the arm is. In other words, is it all easy to access or is it difficult to access because you have to reach far over a desk? If possible, the best thing to do would be to have another person help you. The first person can hold the monitor and then the second person can unscrew the four screws on the back and remove it that way. I typically use the included thumb screws. You can see them in my unboxing video in what I call the "first bag". Here is a link to that part of the video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1Kal2pd8nIdeqZw. The thumbscrews make it much easier to remove or install the monitor because you don't need to use a screwdriver. You also don’t need to be able to see the back of the monitor because you can just feel with your fingers and unscrew them. If you don’t have another person who can help you remove the monitor, I would use something soft like a blanket or pillow and put it on your desk to ensure that your monitor is protected throughout the process. I would then use the included hex tool to take the tension off the arm, so it’s not holding the monitor up and is instead down on top of the desk. I have previously tried to install and remove monitors without first taking off the tension and it can be a problem and work against you. Also, because you’re talking about removing two screws, I think that you’re contemplating removing the piece that connects the monitor to the arm, the piece I call the "bracket" in my unboxing video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1Kal2pd8nIdeqZw. If I were you, I’d leave this piece on the arm and instead simply remove the monitor from the bracket, not the bracket from the arm with the monitor attached (if that makes sense and is what you want to do). Installing and removing monitors can be tricky depending on the dimensions and weight. Please let me know if this makes sense and if the information is useful. I hope that this helps. =)

Is there a preferred way of mounting (by clamp, or drilling?). Which would give most stability?
@SeanDillman
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Christiaan. Thanks for your question. It’s a good one. I think that it depends on many factors. In general, I think that the drilling method produces the cleanest look and would provide the most stability in most situations, assuming that the desk being used is heavy and has enough mass to handle the weight of the monitor arm and the affixed monitor, no matter where the monitor is positioned. If a desk was not heavy enough and if a person installed the base near the outside edge (as opposed to near the center), there may be a potential hazard of the desk tipping over and taking the monitor and stand with it (not a good situation). This would all depend on the desk. If we’re talking about a big heavy desk that isn’t a potential tipping hazard, the drilling method is great. However, this method also requires drilling a hole in the top of the desk (if one is not already available) and having a desktop that is thick enough to handle the weight. The desk will also need to allow enough clearance on the underside to install the nut and bolt. For some people with beautiful desks, they may not want to drill a hole and the desk may be configured in a way that doesn’t allow easy access to the other side of a hole on the bottom. If a person is willing to drill a hole and has the access, they also need to keep in mind that once they choose a location for the hole, it will be mostly permanent (you can’t undo drilling a hole). They could always drill another hole in another location in the future, but they likely wouldn’t want to keep drilling holes and making the top of the desk look like Swiss cheese. With the clamping method, many of the issues I just mentioned aren’t present. The clamping method also produces a seamless look, assuming that the desk is positioned directly against a wall. In this scenario, the clamping method may even offer greater stability than the drilling method because by wedging the clamp between the desk and the wall, it is getting structural support from the wall. If a person placed a desk in the middle of a room and used the clamping method, it may be inferior to the drilling method in terms of stability because there would be no support from a wall, and it would be doubly important that the desk is heavy and not a tipping hazard, particularly because the clamp would be on the outside edge of the desk. Unlike the Swiss cheese scenario that I suggested, with the clamping method, if a person wants to move the clamp to another location, you can move it again as many times as you like without doing any damage to the desk. I should mention that the clamping method also requires a desk that has an overhanging lip. There are many desks out there that are designed in a way which has no lip and would therefore not work with the clamping method. In summary, I suppose that the factors affecting stability include the weight of the desk, thickness of the desktop, and location of the desk (whether it is against a wall). Does that all make sense? Is that helpful? Please let me know. Thanks Christiaan.

If you want to take a look at some of the other comments on this video, this issue has come up a few times for people. The wisdom seems to be that the Ergotron HX series is for larger/heavier monitors and the Ergotron LX series is for smaller/lighter ones. @@SeanDillman Thanks for your reply. Yes, I should have looked at the others. I bought it yesterday. I wedged a couple of golf tees in the spring to hold it in the down position. @@ubute You are most welcome. It's a pleasure to chat about these things, especially with fun people. Haha. I like your creative use of the golf tees. Earlier today I wedged some chopsticks into a bathroom shelf to make it friction fit and stay in place. For monitor arms, I've also heard of people hanging small gym weights on the back to increase the mass. I suppose they perhaps hang them from the thumbscrews. If you want, you could always order a custom plate to increase the weight. Here is a link to one on the Ergodirect website: www.ergodirect.com/17300-add-weight-plate-with-vesa.html. If you plan to stick with your current monitor and expect that it will have a good lifespan, swapping the HX for the LX may be a good idea too, assuming that you can do it easily enough. While it's true that some screens are becoming lighter, we’re also entering the age of super-wide, curved monitors. My understanding of the current specs is that they can be anywhere between about 35" and 50" wide. The HX really shines here because even if a monitor is light, if it's also wide, it will still need a strong arm with heavy-duty components to hold it up and keep it in the right position: vertical height, forward/backward tilt, rotation.

You are not the first person who has said to me that they do not like the pole that comes with the LX. I suppose that it can be an aesthetic thing and we all want our rigs to work great and look great too. =) Adding weights isn't such a bad option if a person has the time to order the right parts, can rig something up themselves if need be (a person could even use gym weights if they did it correctly), and can make it look presentable. I was once reading about an issue involving a courthouse where they wanted to use a certain kind of arm, and they needed to add weight, but they wanted it to look presentable because the arm was being used by a clerk who was visible to everyone in the courtroom (the gallery, witnesses, the jury box, everyone - so in a situation like this, rigging up something makeshift was not an appropriate option). Hi Sean-san, Thank you very much for your valuable advice. I don't want to waste my money, so I will be thinking carefully about which arm to buy before the monitor is delivered. If the arm under the HX cannot rotate 360° like the LH and MVX, then I must eliminate it as an option. Also, the tilt mechanism of the MVH seems to be poor, so this must also be eliminated from the options. That leaves only LH, but we may have to compromise on the design.
