Yeah, this is basically required listening for anyone who wants to go through the history of hip hop. It obviously sounds dated by now but if you ever want to score well on a hip hop trivia quiz you better know the lyrics to this. :) I think this is the album version which is a bit longer than the original and slightly enhances things..but they're pretty similar overall. The album version also randomly replaced the line "I must have got you too hot and burned off your wings" by "Make em make em clap to this" in the middle of a verse. If I recall correctly that was due to an engineer messing up the tape by accident. There's also a refence to Janet Jackson's What Have You Done For Me Lately poppin up out of nowhere in the middle of the song. Some of these rhymes were most likely originally written to be an answer record for that particular song.

I’m here for it Brian! Actually this song is from 1986 and it ruled that summer part of the vanguard of the next school of hip hop alongside Boogie Down Productions South Bronx and MC Shan’s The Bridge and Beastie Boys Hold it now, hit it. In regards to dancing, the dance for this is called The Wop and you could definitely pull it off😎

Production wise, the sound collage aesthetic was very much of the time -- we were also bumping stuff like Art of Noise, New Order, Decadent Dub Team, etc., in addition to early house joints like "Can You Party" by Royal House. It was disjointed often, but funky and innovative. This track and the long version of "Paid in Full" were standouts from that sound/era.

He made DMC(main writer for Run DMC) say he knew it was time to quit rapping soon. It made countless 90s rappers pick up the pen and Rhyme... Whenever u do it i guarantee it also will b top 10 car song jus like Shit is Real was 😁 E B. For Pres was the girly commercial song 😅 Definitely a classic tho so great reaction 💥

For most ppl in new york this song was the first time ever hearing Rakim and his new style. You could hear it coming out of cars that summer Besides the internal rhymes and jazz flow - before this, rappers always used to shout their lyrics. This had a mellow tone that felt sinister The line "then you ask what have I done lately" was a direct reference to the Janet Jackson song "What have you done for me lately" which was recent at the time. Besides the war of the sexes, there was a subtext because hip hop was still struggling to be accepted whereas they would play R&B on the mainstream radio stations. Similar to 1985 when LL Cool J in Rock The Bells said "You hated Micheal and Prince all the way ever since if the beats were made of meat then they would have to be minced". Rap music was fighting for the radio play, MTV rotation, and industry respect that R&B was afforded I remember everyone quoting the 'thought i was a donut tried to glaze me' part. That was a crazy multiple entendre about gold digging (glaze me as in blinded by love / dough as in money). When ppl started playing the B-Side, My Melody, it became obvious Rakim was from another planet and the future had arrived!

This was "Eric B IS President", which was the remix that includes more bells and whistles. The original, "Eric B. FOR President" would probably land as more cohesive for you. Unfortunately, I don't think its on any streaming platforms. It's certainly not on Spotify - I've looked. At least I still have a physical copy on Marley Marl's Marley's House of Hits compilation.

Master P "Ghetto D" sampled this and blew my mind because of the lyrical content and the sound got updated nicely by his [then] production team, "Beats By The Pound". Oddly enough, my first entry into Rakim was in 1987 with "I Aint No Joke" and i didn't even hear "Eric B Is President", a song released in 1986, until after hearing "Ghetto D" which came out in late 1997. The bassline in this track is great, but as far as Rakim songs go, he still had a little ways to go in his career before making more amazing lyrical tracks like "I Ain't No Joke". *people will probably hate me for mentioning the master p song*

That's crazy! I got his autograph when they were taking the photo for the Move The Crowd 12" cover on Bleeker Street around the corner from 4th and Broadway. No one even recognized them but I was geeking. I think when they made that Indian remix of Paid in Full (the song) they blew up in London and crossed over more, and got the success they deserved. You said it perfect, sir. Thanks for the inside knowledge! People who were not there can't understand the impact of the best to ever do it.
